Nuts
It's a SHOWMANS engine & as such has to set the standard in showing off all that blingy bright metal & paint work, the last thing you want is rusty nuts, so I'm painting mine & like Lynn I'll give em a good clean up when required

Re: Lynn Robinson. Showman Scenic
I dint mean to offend anyone but I want to run the engine more than clean it. Having thought that I would be able to keep a simple Agricultural clean I have now learnt. I cleaned the brass a couple of weeks ago as prep for the steam test and when I took it out this weekend it was already tarnished, the chimney really goes with the heat and vapours. I intend to keep the new one as clean as is possible but without driving me mad and turning into an OCD. I have considered cleaverly placed bits of black toweling to catch oil etc as I have seen this done before with good effect, but you have to admit that in real life ( of which these are models trying to emulate that ) showmans would have been filthy just like all the rest, not as they are seen at Dorset etc, but I will agree that they are very eyewatering when presented like that. As you rightly state they are ours and we can do with them what we wish.
Spit & polish!
Hallo Highpressure,
Please be sure that no offence was taken, just trying to enter into the banter of owning a traction engine (or two!!). You are absolutely right, it'll be impossible to keep it "shite & briney" once the fires lit & it's moving about abit!!
So I'll live in this fantasy world for a couple of years untill my showmans is put into steam!!
Regards
Tony

Re: Lynn Robinson. Showman Scenic
Who's gonna polish my nuts???
I can't wait to get Blackbeard all tarnished with hot oil etc.. Might not even line it yet! Bought the Bugler pinstriping tool and some paint but more inclined for it to be just black and brass (Pirate's gold as the kids call it). Got the belly tank stars of Tim, probaly get the motion plate brasses too, brass hub caps, brass bands (no horn jokes please) brass, nameplates will all go well with plain black.
As Highpressure states, we can do what we like to them.
Cheers from Gemany tonight
Brian

Re: Lynn Robinson. Showman Scenic
You may find some of that paint on the bolting faces alters the alignment when the crank dummy goes in. Be interesting to report back. Otherwise you really need a boiler
3rd April Activities
Not much happening at the moment.
SO I decided to do some Nickle plating.
Did not go for a "mirror" finish on the parts as would not look right.
Belly tank sitting on the bed so I can hoover the room.
The bed/store room.
Cleaning parts for Nickle plating
The plating shop.
All wired up and ready.
Power set
Check the current
Items washed and put on

Re: Lynn Robinson. Showman Scenic
Lynn,
They've come out really well..
where did you get the zinc kit from?
I've looked at a few but due to the price I have held back buying until I know which one will do the proper job.
I want a matt finish not a bright finish.
Found one at Frost.co.uk but the price is crazy.
total for the kits come to £120 is that about right?

Re: Lynn Robinson. Showman Scenic
Hi Nick
I have the Frost kit but as its a showmans i'm building ( not another agrument commimg up ) I have gone for the bright nickle finish.
I can tell you that the finish on it is just what i was looking for.
Like you i looked at the price but I can tell you that its worth it.
As its mains powered I don't have to look for a battery and it is easy to use.
Like eveything else it all in the preporation.

Re: Lynn Robinson. Showman Scenic
I think i'm going to go with this company as they provide me with everything i need in one kit. And the price is good too.
The kit looks very similar to the Frost one.
I'll use the battery out of the car to power it.

You can do "dull" or by adding a "brightener"

Is that why your Freelander is giving you grief, it didn't like picking up a very heavey bit steel for your "next vehicle"??
I've spent the last three weeks painting & lining my showmans & it now sits proudly in the centre of my workshop!! I'm pleased with the way it's starting to look. I wish I could post pictures, have tried, but can't get them to upload!! I must make the effort to get a "lady that can" round to show me where I'm going wrong!

Re: Lynn Robinson. Showman Scenic
i'm getting very jealous of all these boilers getting delivered.
Due to cuts at work my pay has now been cut so keeping up with the kits each month is getting very hard.
I plan to carry on with the build but it will be a while till i'm finished.
