Stars
Bloody marvellous Craig,
Saw 'em and had to have them on my RL - I know they aren't prototypical for the RL, but they really do set it off perfectly, particularly against a black colour scheme. The fit and finish is amazing, no gaps, no forced screws, just perfection.

Polishing up nicely

Yes Craig. They are the canine dangles. Took a while to get the machine marks out of them but they do buff up a goodun.

Stars
It's the attention to detail that has been shown on these stars that will make these engines stand out from the others. I was looking at the brake mechanism and fittings on the tender and it is all superb and anyone with an eye for detail will appreciate what has gone into these engines. When completed with a decent paint job I reckon they will attain some of the top values for 4" engines, not that I will sell mine! it's just nice to know that what you are building is of the highest engineering quality. Well done everyone at STW!

Its been a while
Hi All
Due to the "bad weather" excuse by the delivery companies I finally got my next kit last Monday at 18:45.
The parcel had been sitting in Inverness for over 2 weeks!
Anyway. I degreased the parts last night and temporary fit it all together.
Not my usual image quality as done on the phone as a quick update. (Been busy caring for one of my Shetland sheep dogs. He was at the vets and feels very poorly at the moment.)

Well I think it goes someplace in the middle behind the belly tank and is known as a firebox and should reach gas make 1000.

It has got warmer!
Yes!
It has got well above freezing the last couple of days. Snow is going fast and I can get some painting done
Hornplates "riveted" and into primer.
Tender and Belly Tank into final top coat.
The paint shop
Belly Tank top
Tank end cover
Tender
Yes even the oil cans (2 off) are getting the paint work.
All will now sit in the bedroom for at least 7 days to harden ready for colour sanding and polishing.

Paint Paint need more paint!
Hi All
Just been to the paint shop. Spent lots of beer tokens and got a new tin of the top coat, a nice gloss black for trimming the tender and doing the black bits and a bright(ish) red for the motion area between the horn and spec plates.
Hope to do the black in the next couple of evenings.
Will keep you all posted. Not sure if you are all finding my ramblings interesting

Paint job!
Hi Lynn,
Always interesting to see how others are getting on with their engines, gives inspiration & ideas, keep up the good work!!
I'll try to get some "expert help" with my computer & camera & try upload pictures of my first engine. I finished painting & final assemly last week. It's now sitting in my "lounge" & is admired by everyone who visits!!
It's surrounded by bits of showmans engine, 4" wagon & water bowser!!! Does look very impressive!!

What camera you got?
I use a Canon 5dMrk2 and the utility it comes with starts up and downloads into the correct folders as soon as the camera is attached.
I then run the export utility with the width set to 800. Job is a good one!

Star attraction
Hi All
Just a quick snap of the Belly tank star.
Not sure if I have then the correct way round. Is it larger one on the end without the hose bracket?

Changing colours!
Hi
For the observant people. Yes the paint does change colour as it dries! It starts out as a fairly bright red then as it hardens over the next day it darkens to the correct burgundy red.
Most peculiar.
Not as bad as water based gloss black. In the tin it is forest green, when sprayed it goes to a dark royal blue before drying out to black.

Progress 22nd Jan 2011
Hi All
Latest activity.
Change of colour this time to gloss black.
Trimmed out the tender and the belly tank brackets. Also painted the horn plates as well.
Will get some pic's of the horn plates later once my hair has dried.

Tender times
Hi All
Latest progress over the last couple of days.
Got the Horn plates in top coat black. Just waiting now to see where the Red should go between the spec plates. Not sure on that aspect so still waiting for a reply to my query.
Tender inside has now got its 2nd coat of black. Nice and thick in the coal bunker area. Comes out about 2mm in there. Got some dust in it due to a blast of wind. But not too upset as the floor area will have a wooden deck in it and the from of the water tank can not be seen once the horn plates and boiler are attached.
Starting to line out the tender.
Tender inside
Finished lining
Yes I know the seat is going to hang off the back and you may need to undo some bolts. I am currently thinking of the seat being mounted on the water bowser or wagon and not on the tender. I can see advantages with this and also some the main one being. I will have to reverse the traction engine up an inclined driveway to park it in the garage and a tender mounted seat makes this easier where as a trailer mounted seat would not be very easy to reverse.

In-house build
That picture reminds me of when I built my first Burrell & ran it on air whilst it was still in the lounge. It splattered the ceiling in oily gunge from the blast nozzle! Be warned!!!

Re: Lynn Robinson. Showman Scenic
Looking very good Lynn, I hope the floor is reinforced if your going to carry on building it there Just make sure the door is wide enough to drive it out. Don't forget, make visitors use coasters to put cups on it, shame to ruin the paint finish with lots of circles.
Does your dog mind the steam engines, whistles etc? Seems unimpressed in the photo but wait till the Burrell is alive. We have a pair of Jack Russels with us at the rallys, they love it.

Yes the floor is supported as one of the traveral foundation walls were directly under the engine. Would love to finish it in the house but when it starts getting bolted together it is having to move out to the garage.

Re: Lynn Robinson. Showman Scenic
Hi Lynn,
I've been so tempted to do that too but cant be ars*d to shift it all around but the boilers wont be long now and it will roll under its own wheels. By the way do you ever sleep or work, you seem to be forever on here or painting....

Must be different rules for women, can you imagine what would happen if we started putting our engines together in the front room, I know for sure one person whose knackers would be in the vice

Sleep !
Hi
Yes I do sleep but not much. Usually manage about 4 or 5 hours a night if I am lucky.
Yup. I do work. Looking after video conference equipment for the health trust in the Highlands.
I can get to check the forum regular even when at work so would appear that I dont sleep or work.
This week I am on holiday, the old use it or loose it caper that seams to happen at the end of each year.
Todays activity was top coating the Horn plates and part of the spec plates. Now that has to harden ready for the red (bright and not the main colour) between the plates. Not sure as the where the red goes as I do not have any pictures that show it clearly. Does the red only go between the spec plates and down the inside of the horn plates between the spec plates or does it go further. Any assistance would be good.
Also polished the brass plate that attaches to the belly tank and mounted that.
