Rear Wheels
Hi All
Building is going well. Had a problem with a few of the tender bolts but a bit of chasing from the back with a tap cured the issues.
Currently putting the rear wheels on. Doing the left at the moment with the cintered bushes. Need slight honing as the were a tight fit and press in. I think the inside diameter has shrunk slightly.
Question for STW. When do we get the locking collers for the rear wheels. It would be useful to get them with the rear axil to allow easy movement of the enging. The coller would stop the wheel sliding off the axil and the hub cap would stop the wheel sliding too far on.
Only thing "missing" is the bolt for the firedoor handle. None specified on the ISO and I can not see it on the packing list.
Will do pictures later as I need to start up the main computer for that.
Hornplates went on well and lined up very quickly. Took 5 minutes.

Getting ready
Fire door added
Right Hornplate
2nd Shaft casting
Rear axil casting and shaft
Rear spec plate
Front spec plate
All ready for the left hornplate
Left hornplate fitted and Alignment tool in place. And it rotates.
Tender moments
Getting ready to fit the belly tank for the time being. Need to remove for cleeding.
Just checking
Getting there!
Ta Da!!!!!!!
Only couple of points. Lover bolt at the back is too long as it fouls the tender sides if not flush with the hornplate
Are my brakes right?

Bed time
Hi All
Bed time for Crystal. She had her bed covers pulled up and tucked in. I kid you not. Also very firmly secured to the floor of the garage so she does not sleepwalk.
Pictures not included.

Lynn
Inspirational! I do like your pics of the assembly stages - very informative. Looks like first Showmans engine on wheels to you
I noticed that you painted all over the back of the hornplates where the axle cannon boxes, second shaft bearing housing bolts on and the firebox bolts, any issues with being tight due to paint thickness?
What did the neighbours think of it when they saw what you have been up too?

Thoughts
Hi Brian
Had no problem with fitting the hornplates. The paint on the inside of the hornplates is quite thin as it is farly enclosed and should not get dinged.
Thats also part of the reason I had the hornplates apart when fitting to the boiler. It was somewhat easier to bolt things together as parts were much lighter and were put together at right angles where as if it was installed as a single unit. You are fighting the weight and trying to slide parts together. Only real heavy part was the axil as it was very tight in its bushes so did not want to try and wiggle it out again. Then run the risk of damage when puting it back in.

Tony got there first. I was at rolling chassis about 13:00 but did not upload as I had to take mother to B&Q for bits and then take my two dogs for a walk. Then I was installing the security before dinner.

Hi Graeme
Not done anything on the engine this week as been working on the house painting for Parents.
I got Kit 16 but only put the ash pan together to see how it looks and try to get the boiler to belly tank bracket to fit.

No Pic's but progress
Hi All
Just a short update.
I have been fitting the cladding and fettling the panel that goes at the hormplate end.
Couple of observations.
First The spacer that is sitting at the spec plate. I have tapered the ends to allow a easier fit for the cleading due to especially the left hornplate.
Next I made a 3cm cut where the cleading heads down the each side of the firebox. This allowed the cleading to go in effect 2 directions without distorting, also when the cleading is down the left side between the hornplate and boiler it is slightly closer into the boiler.
Then to allow the bracket for the flywheel brake to fit I cut a section out of the cleading. If you mark the centres and outer width of the plate on the inside and cut out. You have enough space and it does not distort the cleading. Also I cut 5 threads of the 2 bolts as they were very close to the boiler barrel.
Hope this helps others.

Been doing more thinking
I know thinking on a sunday!
I may trim the two fingers that are on the front cleading panels where they go up past the front of the exiter platform and behind the smokebox, back to the edge of the exiter bracket as currently you have 2 thicknesses at the top due to the exiter infill and the smokebox. By trimming back this will look better as a single thickness.

Did not get to photos or touching the engine last night. Ended up towing trees out of next doors front garden.

That would have been fun with the winch on our engines.

I must admit you are correct. Got the crank attached last night. Will not require too much fettling as I can actually turn it by hand with just putting everything in place. I will do photos tonight. I did have to remove the paint from the bearing housing faces to allow the bronze bushes to slide in to place.
As the left hand bush is round. Should I put locking compound behind them to keep the orientation and the oil holes lined up?
Also adding to the stable. I have ordered the water bowser. Should arrive Tuesday. It will go nicely behind the traction wagon or 2.

Cranking about
Hi All
Got home from work early today. Got the steering chains blackened. Before I done the blacking I welded the eyes on the adjusters so that they can not pull out over time. Done the copper ring round the inspection plug.
