Our full size only costs £450 total for the cold visit and then another in steam. Hsb who have various regions they cover.

Re: Lynn Robinson. Showman Scenic
HOLY SH*T BATMAN!!! Mine cost me a fiver at the local ME ( plus memership ) or £12 for the Five Counties Steamers membership whose sole existance is for the boiler test day in March each year to get a ticket sorted. At the moment I struggle to earn £450 in three weeks!!!!! Glad I've paid for the engine, if it was the start now then no chance.......
Re: Lynn Robinson. Showman Scenic
That's Ok if you have a local ME club.
The closest for me is 230 miles round trip on A class road. So once you add the fuel, wear and tare and 6 hours travelling.
It is actually costing £230 + vat for the whole lot. and would not be far off on going to a "local" club.
Where with a commercial inspector. He or she comes to me

Re: Lynn Robinson. Showman Scenic
The other thing I found is some clubs will not test steel boilers only copper.

Just mind as some inspectors will charge for the time they have to travel. RSA and the likes so it could cost more depends who you use. so if it takes 1 hour to get to you then they charge and hours rates..
My ME club do steal boiler no problems. the hydro is only for 2 years though and that's understandable.

Re: Lynn Robinson. Showman Scenic
Mine is £115 for cold test followed by steam test all in, includes 320 mile round trip for him from Chichester.
Happy with that and then the cold test will be valid for 10 years I understand, so just a yearly steam ticket after that.

Re: Lynn Robinson. Showman Scenic
Not sure what it should cost, but £115 for a 320mile trip seems a bargain, bet the fuel cost was nearly half that.
When the time comes he's the man for me.

Re: Lynn Robinson. Showman Scenic
He's Peter Hawkins a batch one Burrell builder who is the reason I am a customer. I did an aerial for him and noticed the unbuilt kits in his front room and commented on them. The rest they say is history. He is a very nice guy who nows owns a full size roller, I believe he used to work for RSA or another boiler firm and is now indepandant. Helped me a few weeks ago at Amberley when the gauge glass went. He has an ad in last months Old Glory.
Re: Lynn Robinson. Showman Scenic
Give him a bell - he seems a top bloke from the conversations I have had with him.
For those who haven't steamed yet - before you fit the gear guard, make sure you are sure your horn bolts are super tight , do the filler with JB weld or whatever because when it's all together you can't get to the bolt under the guard on the left side without taking the wheel and guard.
I've only steamed about 6 times now and have still tightened them further.
Both main bearings have loosened up so I have been out adjusting and checking the motion tonight. Found one main bearing locknut had come loose, and took up a small amount in two eccentric straps - both forward ones.
Getting there as they say,
Rick

Re: Lynn Robinson. Showman Scenic
Crystal is happy she passed the cold inspection.
Now started to re-cloth her. Done some woodwork last night for a hour.
I am replacing the wool blanket with wood as when I took off the cleading to find a steam leak I found there was significant wetness and corrosion on the bottom of the barrel at the smokebox end.
Hopefull tonight I will get the woodwork finished and the cleading back on. Need to repair the section that goes round under the block first.

New Clothes!
I like the Princess's new clothes, definately the way to go!! .... It's easier to keep in place, it's traditional, it looks good (when she's undressed!! ) & I recon it'll reduce corrosion in the long term too!! Win Win!!
Next time I drop my belly tank & remove the cleading I'm going to wrap 3" wide aluminium adhesive tape (The stuff you get from builders merchants to seal aluminium coated foam insulation board) round the whole lot, that should bring the thermal efficiency up quite a bit!!
I'm in the workshop today, working on the gear levers etc............... With a bit of packing here & a bit of relieving there, it's all starting to work really well. Just got to ease up the second gear, then, I can bung the paint on!!
Regards,
Tony

Re: Lynn Robinson. Showman Scenic
Hi Tony
Thanks for the remarks.
On your gear change. Smooth out the under surface of the gear fork castings and the contact area on the support casting. I did that to mine and what a difference. If your 3rd gear is going one direction but not the other. Check the fork pin as mine was slightly out of co-axial allignment and I also added a 3mm washer under the pivot to raise the bar up a bit. These 2 action cleared the issue with 3rd gear sliding. My only problem now is 3rd is very tight on the mesh but this should get better with a bit of running. I sometimes have to run the engine to pull it out of gear. Not too much of a hardship.

Re: Lynn Robinson. Showman Scenic
Hi Lynn,
Yep, had already done most of what you suggest. With regard to what you say about the third gear, it's crucial to get the virtical pin which is silver soldered to the "C" shaped bit wot engages with the 3rd gear absolutely streight... Mine wasn't... but is now, after careful aplicaction of brute force of a mallet while holding the "C" bit in the vice. ... That alone sorted the "binding" of that gear
I have actually put two thicknesses of an aluminium beer can under the right crank bearing blocks to lift the crank that little bit to give a free'r gear mesh.
After me cuppa, it's clean up bits & start painting!! YES!!!
Congrats by the way, Crystal is becoming of age, could be the perfect lady this time next week Well done
Regards,
Tony
