Re: Andy's 4"dcc road loco
Hi lynn .Progess is good just painted the crank / eccentrics and in the middle of painting the cladding. All the motion now plated . Might wait until I get the water pump before fitting crank for the final time?. Cylinder all bolted down and expansion links fitted .What with Christmas and now I'm ill it's been nearly two and half weeks .il post some pictures up later when feeling better. Here's a couple of the crank.

Another fine road loco emerging.
lovely paint finish, how do you get such a great finish with not a sign of a spec of dust in the paint?

Re: Andy's 4"dcc road loco
Trust me wait till you see the finish on the engine itself, sickening but in a good way . Like Tony's and Tim's it's a pity to light a fire in some, they will never look as good as they do before that first session. However it will be a top grade engine and this year will be running!!!!! Roll on August or so.
Re: Andy's 4"dcc road loco
The paint is craft master bright red with a small amount of thinners for spraying . It's not varnished

Gears
Been playing with the gears Still got to do mod on 3rd gear hub. Also I found the holes on uj hub slightly out Which was making the 2nd gear shaft wobble but all sorted now. It's started to come together now.

Re: Andy's 4"dcc road loco
Sorry for not looking at your thread sooner but I have been a bit pre-occupied with blackbeard for the last few weeks - for good reason.
Regarding the painted crank which does look fabulous may I add, I see the paint is ctually on the big end bearing area. Assuming it is masked how thick is the paint? I had mine powder coated and the thickness interfered with the big end bearing fit as it is very snug between the crank webs, or was on mine. I spent quite a while cuting it away and then still had to polish the sides of the bearing down a bit with some emery on a flat surface on the high points to get the shells in between the webs. All very tidy now but nerve wracking working with the knife and a scraper on the coating.

Re: Andy's 4"dcc road loco
Not sure on thickness of paint but it's thinner at the big end and thicker at top but only just. Might have to use 1200 wet/dry on sides of bearing. sorry yes big ends where mask and i took the masking tape off when the paint was still wet as not to leave a hard edge .

Wow, they do look nice. I assume as the teeth rub together and wear they will shine up a bit. I should have done that for Blackbeard.

Re: Andy's 4"dcc road loco
Wow I like that I have used the frost blacking kit on smaller components but these look wonderfull should also avoid clearance issues found with paint.
