My Burrell new build
Morning all, hope all you builder are well and enjoying your builds.
Its been sometime since I have written on my thread, have been busy painting and lining my tender and hornplates. In between buliding my cylinder block.
Now almost finished the tender and hornplates, I have a couple of questions for you.
1, Is it ok to attract the tender and hornplate together permanently or wait till I have the boiler, which I hope will come this mouth.
2. Has anyone made a tread board for their tender? If so, what size wood did you use.
I have a couple on here that have and think they look good.
Will post some more picture in the next few days.
Cheers Charlie

Re: My Burrell new build
In my opinion for what its worth, i would wait for the boiler, and fit the tender after the hornplate alignment. I found it was easier to fit hornplates after the firedoor etc are fitted.

Hi Mike
Thanks for your reply. I had thought the same thing, from reading other threads.
Think I will wait, as you suggested.

Re: My Burrell new build
Hi Chris,
I would agree with what Mike says about fitting the tender to the hornplates after they've been fitted to the boiler.
I'm thinking of making a tread board out of those stirring sticks you get from places like McDonalds as a little fun side project.

Thanks Ian for your reply.
I'm hoping to make a tread board at some point, guess I will have to experiment with different sizes of wood to find the right scale

Hi Charlie
I like the black paint on the tender beading, it breaks up the green really well so may have to follow your lead. Looking good.
Best wishes

Re: My Burrell New Build
Hi Simon, thanks for commits.
As you have said, the black does look nice. Think if it was all the same colour, green, it would look too plain.
Think I've done the worst of the lining now, the corners were the worst to do, but think all the headaches was worth it:D

Re: My Burrell New Build
Hi all, quick update.
Sent the weekend putting cylinder block on boiler, yesterday, broke a stud off tightening up the second time round the block:(
Bugger and several other words sprung to mind!!!
Took block off and managed to get stud out and found a replacement, a bolt without the head on!
Late last night fitted block again, had more success the second time and block on now. Looked today and a little folic paste has come out and will try tightening it down again tomorrow.
Hopefully no more broken studs!!!
Hope all is well with other builders.

Morning all, hope you are enjoying your builds.
Some more pics of my progress so far.
As you can see, smokebox and cylinder block on now, getting quite heavy to lift about!

Re: My Burrell New Build
First part of cladding on, when on relatively easy, the next bits where more of a challenge!
Couldn't resist any longer, put hornplates on! Beginning to look like and engine now.
Thats all for now.
Got more painting to do.

Definately, really taking shape now, nice set of photos showing it going together especially as I'm not a builder and find its really good to see how they go together for the times I need to take mine apart

Re: My Burrell new build
Hi Livesteam,
Thanks mate, things are coming together well. I know what you mean, I have enjoyed the build, so far. I could of just brought a fully made engine, been for cheaper, but I'm with you, for better to know how it goes together, for when you need to do repairs and maintenance.
I'm no engineer, had no experience of building either. I had, for some years, been involved with full sized engines, used to rally them, in my younger days. Steam gets in your blood, like a drug.
I had the chance to build my own engine, glad I have. Hoping to build a 4" after this one is finished.
