Steering Issues
Hi all, having problems with my steering. Have connected the steering chains, it does work but has very limited movement. The chains go tit without the check chain becoming tight. The instructions I have are very little, which came with kit 15. Is there any further instructions sent with a later kit?
I am waiting for kit 23 to arrive.
Any help will be appreciated
Thanks Charlie

Re: Steering Issues
The chains need to be loose to the point it requires more than half a turn on the wheel before you get anything moving at the front end.
The reason being is geometry differences from the chain bar and the angular moment.
On Crystal I have in effect two configurations. Once for road and one for rally field. Road I have the chains significantly tighter on the bar, 2 links more or it might be 3. Rally field with undulations etc the chains need to be somewhat looser to allow for the front axial rise and fall as well as turning moment.
The steering lock is the check chain. Its position along the chains also affects the turning ability. As you have a cross in the steering chains the closer to the cross the more movement allowed before "lock" occurs. On rough ground I have Crystals a bit tighter so the wheel can not hit the boiler and bind up.
Hope this is helpful.

Re: Steering Issues
Hi Lynnr, it does help a bit. I am thinking I have attached the chains wrong. I have rapped the chain around the shaft and put the bolt though tow links of the chain. I'm thinking now, maybe I should just put the bolt though one link.
The chains are quite loose byt get very tight before I get much lock at all.

Re: Steering Issues
One of the chains goes over the roller bar, the other under. As Lynn says, there has to be slack or you wouldnt get much lock? Ive watched the full sized ones it appears to take forever before wheels start to steer.

Hi
There should be two holes in the steering bar. One chain goes up and over and bolted to the bar. The other chain goes under and round.

Re: Steering Issues
I see that you have a link adjuster at the wheel end of your steering chain. We dont have that on the 2".

Re: Steering Issues
Thanks for pics Lynnr. My chains I have attached the same way, They are very loose when wheels are straight, but before the check chain gets tight, both steering chains are tight, the steering locks. I'm wondering if the chains are too short.

Re: Steering Issues
Charlie,
This is how I fitted mine, put the front axle on full lock, either left or right, attached the chain furthest away from the chain shaft to the opposite side of the shaft, then use the steering wheel to wind the shaft on the opposite lock and connect the other chain to the other end of the shaft.

Hi Barry, I had thought of doing that. I'll give it a go and see how it goes. Thank to you all for your help.

Re: Steering Issues
Hi Barry, thanks for your suggesting. I tried that today and it worked. Steering working as it should.
Thanks again for your help.
