Finally temporarily fitted the boiler cladding, quite a  difficult and fiddly job with lots of filing and trimming and yes that is my blood, the metal is really thin and sharp and I should have started by de-burring it.

Thank you for your comments, hopefully this week I'll get the cladding painted and refitted. Then it should be possible to fit the belly tank and some of the piping. I've ordered the chemical blackening for the fire box doors and slide mechanism, is best to chemically blacken the ash pan and grate or just paint with BBQ paint?

Cheers

Trial fitted the fire doors tonight, a bit fiddly as I've already fitted the tender and axle so difficult to fit and then tighten the bottom slider bolts but got there in the end, they slide really smoothly. Had to shorten all of the bolts by about 4mm as the longer bolts hit the back of the boiler before they were fully tight.

Looking very nice indeed.

The ash pan just paint BBQ satin black or stove paint. Mine is fine after over 900 hours use.

Looking very good Simon, I also spent a good few hours last weekend fitting the cladding, I found that the back section very difficult if not impossible to fit without damaging the existing paint work so with that in mind I decided to cut that panel into two pieces as the front and middle sections with a small overlap, seems to look fine and is a lot easier to put on and remove !!

Also. Have u tried fitting the ashpan to the engine ad I found that the holes for the pins did not line up with the holes in the foundation ring so had to re-drill new holes in ashpan and fill the old ones

Hi Tim

I've not yet tried to fit the ashpan, hopefully that's tonight's job but thanks for the heads up.

I too scratched the inside of the hornplates, not too badly, when trying to fit the rear section of cladding, in the end I cut 1/16" off the bottom on the off side of the cladding to make it fit, you can't see it as the cladding touches the inside of the hornplate but now it fits well and can easily be removed and replaced, well at least one more time to paint and then fit permanently. I had to cut a bit out of the cladding to clear the inspection hole and to fit the copper ring and also had to file the off side oval hole??? out a bit as the cladding fouled on the weld.

I thought it best to fit the copper ring now rather than paint and then hammer the ring over at later on with the risk of damaging the paint, when fitted I smoothed off the copper by rubbing round a piece of wood, I'm quite pleased with the end result.

Quick question the bolts on the brass bands should these be at the bottom as they seem a bit long to clear the belly tank?

Cheers

Simon

Hi Simon. The bolts for the smokebox end brass band should go to the bottom but the other two have to go to the top.
Cheers Tim

Thought I'd fit the belly tank before removing and painting the cladding, glad I did as the cladding needs to be trimmed to allow the bracket on the front of the tank to be bolted onto the boiler.  Found the tank difficult to fit, in the end I needed to loosen the front of the hornplates and lever them apart to allow the rear brackets of the tank to fit properly.  Took a few hours but got there in the end.
