2" progress and painting

Am wondering how many 2" Burrells are under construction and how far on they are. I have recently received kit 8 but although I have assembled most of the kits I haven't yet got to grips with painting. I assembled the front wheels, filled the gaps round the rims with car body filler and araldited the spokes. I intended to have them powder coated as recommended but I now understand that powder coating won't stick to the filler as it cannot be magnetised to attract the paint. Has anyone got any suggestions please? At the moment the rear wheels are just partially assembled pending a decision on the way forward.

I had a go at spraying some small parts with Plastikote which seems to work quite well up to a point but doesn't appear to give a finish anything like a sprayed finish from a spray gun or air brush as one sees at exhibitions. Has anyone got any advice re spray guns and paint.

All suggestions gratefully received! Also would be very interested to know how other 2" 's are progressing.

There are special fillers for powder coating but my friend who is a director at a local company that has a powdercoat line and he says even the specialist ones do not always work. Powder coat does stick to some fillers but the issue is the moisture still present in the hardened filler. I have had two traction wagon wheels done to try it out. One wheel went through the process as normal, the second one went through the oven on the conveyor before powder was applied to try and dry out the filler. The latter wheel was better but not perfect, it gives a spotted finish where bubbles burst on the surface of the filler. My friend has suggested I bake the wheels in the oven at home for an hour or so and then when they have cooled, paint the filler with etch primer. Not tried it yet but I will in the ocming weeks once I get the motivation to go back to buiilding again.

Thanks very much for your advice. I will give it a try. Do you know if there are any critical temperatures for araldite to avoid ie. so it wont melt? Presumably I should put on the tyres first?

I had the four inch done with powder, it certainly doesnt stick to the filler. If you want to melt the tyres put them on first!!! The araldite can be cured in the oven so I doubt it will melt but again the powder might not stick to it, I made a decision not to use the araldite for this reason, I figured that the use of locktite and the fact that the hub caps hold the screws in should stop anything undoing, so far so good but I know that I chose to ignore the instructions. No one even notices that I dont have a curved fillet in the rim, have a look on my build thread for pictures etc. Powder coat is quite thick and may be a bit more fragile than paint and possibly chips more easily.

I am fitting the traction wagon tyres after powder coating using the Isoflex method I used for the front wheels of Blackbeard, I have masked the rims where the tyres will fit. You need to use a special tape to mask for powder coating.

I did fill the hubs with araldite and there are no ill affects from the powder coating in those areas.

I hadn't noticed it and on that basis on the next build Ill not bother.
