Colours of lining on President
I've searched the forum because I'm sure this has been answered before but can someone tell me what the offical colours are for the lining of The President or at least the closest match One Shot do or an equivalent?
I will be starting the tender when I get back from hols in a few weeks and want to get the stock in.
Thanks Kev.

using one shot enamel
imitation gold
bright red
chrome yellow.
The yellow looks really bright against the gold but it does on the real one too.

Thanks Nick I had actually found the message I was looking for too, it ws a PM not a post. However can you confirm which way round the yellows are?, Is it Crome Yellow on the Red and the thin line as Imitation Gold or vice versa?
Cheers Kev.

Re: Colours of lining on President
Burrells were often painted red on the footplate (Alfa red is a good match): the same colour as the painted parts of the motion. It's not the most practical colour, however. The inside of the roof was normally painted eau de nil, a green colour. President may of course be different in preservation.

Re: Colours of lining on President
I have experimented with various colours to see which one matches 'The President'. The Paint job on this engine isn't a Burrell standard which causes some colour matching issues when trying to copy it.
All the below paints are One Shot Lining Enamel from http://www.pinstripinguk.com
I tried Vermillion - Way to Orange and clashes with the red I have used on the rest of the engine (Bright Red) which is a dark red similar to Craftmasters Alpha Red.
I also tried Fire Red but this was still to Orange.
I have studied loads of photos and used photo shop to compare the reds.
At the moment it looks like i'll be using the same red i used to line the engine. (Bright red) Silly name really as it's not bright !!!!
It's a darkish tone and doesn't shout at you. Because the main colour is Black, light colours really stand out.
I have found that when you take photos of the tender the camera distorts the colours and therefore you don't get a good reflection of what the colours actually are. I have come to the conclusion that the red used on the tender and motion is the same as the red used to line.
what i have found is the colour is very close to the one used on the lines. The problem with the photos is finding one with tender and lines with the same quality of light source so you can make a good comparison.
The image below is the best one i have found which shows the line under the fly wheel brake handle and the handle colour close together.
They are a near match.
Of course some may disagree but I think it is simply finding a colour your happy to live with and looks good in scale.

Colour balance and taking picture of pain schemes
Hi
If your camera has the ability to set manual white balance this is best used when wanting to get "colour" information.
Use an A4 sheet of white paper and defocus the camera on it before setting white balance or use a 18% gray card.
Most compacts have a manual white balance and do not handle large areas of solid colour very well using the in camera automatics.

Re: Colours of lining on President
On seeing this thread I wonder if the following CAD drawings are of any use? They are from when we were modeling President at Midsummer Models.

.......and there was me about to delete my post now the images appeared, and no one would be any the wiser. Now it wont let me.
I imagine most of us have seen the Midsummer Models engine models, but is anyone hasn't they are well worth looking at, the detail is great, and if your building a replica of one of the engines modeled it would sit much better on the mantel piece than the 4" will.

Reviving a really old thread...
Does anybody know what the closest Craftmaster equivalent of 'imitation gold' would be? Is it their 'Gold Colour'?

Did you get the Craftmaster gold colour in the end Simon and was it a good match? I am about to order the lining colors too and wondered the same thing regarding the gold colour.

No I didn’t get it. I’m still deciding on engine colour at the moment. Probably going crimson lake now…

OK thanks Simon. I think I will order it and see what it looks like on a trial bit first.
Best of luck with your build.

Re: Colours of lining on President
Yes I did, it seems OK but not sure it is a true likeness, it doesn’t seem very good to me. I can take a photo if you like. Hopefully I will mark out the lines on the spokes later this week.
