IanL Road Loco

I have just started my build of the road loco. I believe it was the last one from the current batch. So far just received kits 1 on 28 July and 4 end of August. I have now painted the front wheels but not got a gloss finish despite using the Craftsmaster paint. Probably need to give them a bit of a rub down before starting the pinstriping.

The finish looks mat at the moment after putting on 3 coats but I have noit flatted the final coat as I am waiting to do the pinstripping and not decided yet what to do. Probably golden yellow with a red centre stripe.

Have just completed the first rear wheel construction, spent this weekend dry building and bonding the wheel. Will have to leave it until next weekend as am going to St Andrews for the week with work. Not to play golf, never played golf in my life expect for crazy golf with the kids.

Welcome on board the STW train. Good luck on your build. Wheel building seems so long ago now but it is only 10 months for me.
Are you staying with 1 kit per month or are you going for the catch up?

Personally not dealt with Craftmaster paints so can not advise on the flatness.

I am planning on staying with monthly kits but may be able occassionally to go for a bit of catch up if the sales bonus allows!

i take it your not spraying with that car in there

not trying to tell anyone how the suck eggs but spray paint gets everywhere. even if you can't see it on things you can feel a very fine splatter.

trust me. i've learnt the hard way

As you guessed I am not spraying the paint as I cannot aways get the Cobra out of the garage. The weather equipment on it does not really work! So I am brush painting with lots of rubbing down on most coats.

Welcome aboard Ian,

After completing my wheels they were moved to the outside garage. It have been several months since I last saw them (personally, I have forgotten what they look like ). Seeing pictures of your wheels brought me out in a nervous rash, remembering all that gluing, fixing the reverts and using the car filer .

Hi Mark,

The Cobra was my last build project completed in April 2006,

this was taken at Stoneleigh Show in 2006, Engine is Chevy V8 5 litre produces about 300bhp, acceleration should give Deans yellow peril a work out.

The body shell and chassis were produced by Pilgrim based in Small Dole in Sussex, it took me 18 months to complete, the engine is a very tight fit in this chassis with just 2-3 mm clearance front and rear of the engine and fire wall and steering rack. Unlike STW you have to find or make every bracket, nut and bolt on the car. So not a kit in the STW way, which is amazing to me, having built a number of cars in the past this road loco kit means no more cold, wet, muddy trips to the scrap yards.

LOL Deans yellow peril sounds like a good challenge to me haha just see his face when he loses and realise the difference in price as well haha.

Well done Ian, a new photos thread to follow and you beat Brian and Dwane M to it too

I am 12 months in to my build myself, I picked up my first kit at Old Warden rally last year and did get a head a little with some bonus so actually half way with 15 kits done.

Like the car too, i do like the American muscle cars much more than those sreaming Italian things - much overated

Let alone buying one. At 1.3 gallon per minute it empties it's tank in 19 minutes.

I should think STW have sold more Traction Engines than VW have Bugatti Veyrons - and you may actually make a small profit when you do. They cost more to make than VW sell them for

It'd be a nice car if someone else was picking up the tab or my lottery rollover came through. Even then the nappy brown bonnet would have to go! A nice bright yellow would look good, now I saw a nice yellow recently on a Ferrari................................

I am not sure about yellow on a car I used to have a golden yellow Lotus seven, having parked it outside a slaughter house on a hot sunny day I came back to a black car. It was completely covered on tiny black flies. They must have thought it was a flower of some sort.

Have been back a week from St Andrews and been painting the rear wheel so far got two coats of etch primer on and two coats of undercoat. Now need to do a good rub / flating down before starting the top coat enamel, hopefully get some time on Sunday to start the preparation for top coat, as am off ballooning tomorrow for the day.

Hi Just started to put the top coat on and the finish is really glossy, so much different from the front wheels which have turned out satin. Same paint out of the same pot so any suggestions why the rear wheel may have turned out glossy

This is after just one coat of enamel another one to go.

Looks like I will have to repaint the front wheels. The only difference I can think of is the front wheels were painted 24 hrs after putting on the last undercoat. Where as the rear wheel did not get painted for 4 days after the last undercoat.

By painting the gloss onto the undercoat before it was fully cured some of the lacquer in the gloss has soaked into the undercoat. Even when it is fully cured some loss of gloss on the first couple of topcoats occurs over time. I've found the third gloss coat is the one that keeps its shine long term.

Thanks for the info the front wheels did get three top coats at 24hr intervals. Maybe I need to give longer for the undercoats to dry out before top coating as happened with the rear wheel. So it looks like the fronts will get 4 top coats before pinstriping. Hopefully that will get me a gloss finish on the fronts to match the rear.

Hi Steve, have now put another top coat on a front wheel and it now matches the rear wheel nice a shiny but will need another coat and then leave to harden before trying to rub down and get a smooth finish. Thanks for the suggestion.

Got home today to find my third kit, kit 5 right hand rear wheel I just hope there are only four wheels on this machine as I will be dreaming of wheel spokes before long.

There is more than 4 wheels

One of my neighbours helped the delivery man to unload the wheel. The delivery guy asked what I was building, my neighbour likes a joke so told him he did not want to know, after being pressed he said I was building a v2 rocket. So I wonder what they will be saying back at the depot?

Also received one of my wheels today ..and still have the two to do for the water bowser.
