Nice work Ian, nearly there now.

Did you get the modified lubricator part with the correct size disc (with the actuating pin sticking out on your photo), I forget the name for it. The part was modified by changing the disc size or something like that.

Hi Brian,

Yes I got the modified piston with the larger head even so it is still close to slipping off.

I have had a number of distractions recently helping my son renovate his first house being the biggest so not spent much time on the engine.

Have fitted a 90 degree bend in the water lifter connection. I found a standard 3/4 BSP pipe fitting this is a bit chunky and not as smart as the ones made by other builders but hopefully will surfice for the time being.

As a fellow brush painter have you got any tips on keeping the 'bits' out of the paint? Yours looks really impressive, I can't get a coat of paint down without something getting in it. Also forgive me if you have said already in the thread but what are the blue and red you are using?

Hi Chris,

the colours are Oxford Blue and Bright red. The flash used to take the pictures has washed out the colours the blue actually looks much darker in daylight. As for keeping the bits out of the paint.

A very clean brush
try and cover the item while it dries.
then when that does not work which 99 out of a 100 , I flat every coat down, the final enamel often gets 5+ coats , then flatted back gradually reducing down to 1500 grit used with soapy water. then Farcel G3 cutting paste and T cut. then if applying pin strip do it now. My plan is then to use a polish to really get a shine on the surface. Some parts this has worked well others ie the flywheel is still a work in progress and it has 10 coats of enamel, .

I am intending taking the engine to Whissendine this Saturday so decided I needed to try it in the trailer. So this was the first time he has been out of the garage and got sun on its back.

It fitted in the trailer but getting the  balance point sorted was a different matter.

It runs  Very Happy
https://youtu.be/LK85NotpZrs

Sorry for the noise of the compressor.

Initially I had a horrible noise of air leaking up the exhaust, thank you to Brian and Barry for their thoughts and suggestions. I discovered the starter valve was being held open by the regulator when it was closed. Plus the LP valve was not floating and stuck held off the cylinder hence the air from the compressor was escaping out the exhaust. These issues fixed and it now runs on 40psi.

A number of leaks need to be sorted. Boiler to steam head pipe is leaking on the soldered joint. As is the pressure guage pipe. Both clacks are leaking, and the whistle valve the started valve has a very slight leak so that will need another whack.

It is one week short of three years from delivery of the first kit, a big thank you to STW.

Thanks to everyone for their comments. As you have probably noticed it is running as a single cylinder in the video as the LP side is open hence why there is such a powerful sounding chuff. I have not fitted the LP side plate and the chuff is somewhat more muted but there is more power for the same pressure and the starting valve actually worked.

That should run a treat on steam, far better than air, cures a lot of niggley leaks due to expansion. Get a fire in it man!! On a serious note having set the timing numerous times that is a very even beat so not far off. Might need a little tweak under steam when really hot again due to expansion but nothing too difficult, thats already been done now. Andy will confirm the first few steamings are painful and then it all starts to settle down.

Found several more leaks the clacks seem to have sorted themselves out the main problem is the joint to the steam head from the boiler this was replaced by STW following my compressed air test but this one is leaking more. also found the blower is not working, ie no steam coming through when opening the globe valve. Water pump and injector both worked. but fire went out after about 2 hours.

once sorted the problems will have another go and then look to get a steam test.

Well done Ian, a little dirt on your engine now and a huge milestone.

I notice you only ran it at around 40psi so it is was still running as a single. There is a knock on the video which could be a big end bearing, worth taking a look. Either that or a valve rod tapping the end of the valve chest as they are very close and mine needed some adjustment when setting it.

From the rear view on film when you opened the regulator wide it looked like steam was coming from the side of the cylinder around the valve chest cover. Is this correct or was it from gland packing needing adjusting?

Please don't take this the wrong way, just pointing out my observations from the video. Cracking job and the number of things to adjust will reduce each time you steam it. Nothing coming from blower is rather strange, could be a blockage in the globe valve itself.

Looking forward to your next video, just about to upload another of Blackbeard, more heavy haulage. Nearly your turn.

Hi Brian,

Yes the valve chest side was leaking through the name plate screws these stopped after a couple of minutes. The knock is only there when running forward silent when in reverse, any suggestions? I was thinking of checking the slides to see if they need reshimming. The spring on the LP valve is too weak and not holding the valve closed. I will being stripping the blower valve to check what is going on. There is also some water leaking out of the belly tank top seam, despite all the POR .

The tender try taps all let water through even when turned OFF, as I am unlikely to use them I may just seal them up.

Thanks for the help and ideas.

Best wishes

Congratulations Ian. An occasion worth celebrating. Re the knock I had a similar problem and tracked down the lower nut on the eccentric was tapping the shaft of the water pump.Abit of grinding with the dremel and problem solved.Cheers Shane.

Post  bjwlancashire Tue 12 Aug 2014, 9:39 pm

Ian

The knock could be the valve rod on the end of the chest or more likely the position of your forward gear notch in the reverser quadrant. If the revering lever is trying to move when running it is to far forward and the die block is possibly hitting the top of the eccentric. I set the position of my full forward notch after I had run the engine. I found the furthest forward point of the reverser while the engine was running, you feel when it is to far is it starts to bend the reach rod when the die block hits the end of the slot in the eccentric.

Regarding the LP valve, the steam pressure itself should hold the valve against the face. The spring is just to be sure. I have removed my springs and the only thing to be ware of is if you coast along with the regulator shut and then pull the reverser back to slow down you can get a situation where the valve is off the face and no braking occurs. Weird the first time it happens.

Regards

Brian
