I thought I might throw this in for discussion as it doesn’t have anything 'hanging' from the Bunker extension, but is fixed on the tow bar and supported by arms stretching forward under the Bunker and exerting the force upwards against the internal structure of the bunker nearer to the fixing to the hornplates.....

That looks a good idea with nothing hooking over the bunker ,thats the lowest seat arrangement i have seen so far.

Clever design. It leaves the centre of the clevis free for the waggon drawbar, but turning circle may be reduced as currently configured. A wider bench seat with wider diagonal bracing would overcome that limitation.

I have found getting the seat as low as you can without having to perform contortionism is the best way to drive a model with a cab. Being 6’2” it’s what to do with the legs which I find a challenge!

For those concerned about towing, it may be worth considering a ‘disconnect’ from the clevis, i.e. have a second clevis attached to the back of the seating arrangement, this would prevent the tow bar of the trailer/organ/living waggon fowling any seating device or as Tim suggests a wider seat with broader diagonal bracing.

However it is the principle I like and getting away from ‘hanging off" the back which I have never liked on engines with extension bunkers.

I would also add if it felt a bit low for some then the base of the padded bit could be made thicker to raise you up and also that gives scope for some sort of tool storage in a box if required. I had that on my ag and it was the most handy thing, meaning you always had at least a screwdriver and ratchet to hand. Plus you could put a phone in there and a camera ( compact type)

looks comfy but would having the driver that much further back from the rear axle change the centre of gravity (esp. with 2 adults) and make the engine more prone to lifting in the front?

Judging by the weight in the front end there should be no risk of lifting. For those building the Showman's there should be no problem with two sitting behind, I have seen a number of LSM engines with double seats on the back.

I like this design..

The things that are attractive is some of the person weight is pushed directly under the rear axle.
It is also low so your not doubling over when trying to add coal or manage the boiler.
The canopy becomes less of a hassle as you sit lower.
adding a bench seat still allows the tow bracket to be used fully. The cross bars can be made wider apart.

I think STW should seriously consider a run of these types of seat i would definitely buy one as i don't have the tools to build one myself.
Might as well pay STW than someone else.

I agree with Nicks comments as in I dont have the time or inclination to want to make a seat and this design will suit the purpose. Can we assume a seat of some sorts is provided as part of the build or do I remember reading in another thread that a seat was not going to be done for the reason that no-one can agree on the design and that the majority would be discarded

How about having three options:

1, no seat (the builder makes his own) and a small reduction in the last kit price

2, A single seat similar to the SC Burrell, included in the last kit price.

3, A double seat (design to be agreed from the best ideas submitted) for a price worked on STW standard costings/pricings.

That should please everyone.................................................perhaps! study

Steve & others,

Speaking to Steve briefly I believe we only intend to supply the single seat option as standard. We won't be looking to offer a reduction and if customers then chose not to use them that's up to them.

An option of a double seat may well be offered but it's not easy as like someone said in an earlier post everyone's size, height, arm length etc varies so no design will be perfect for everyone.

I appreciate STW's comments re the seat as it would be difficult to make a seat that suits all.. so ....

If there is someone out there with the capabilities and willing to make a double bench seat like the one above that hangs underneath the tender please get in touch. i'll gladly pay for materials and time.. Or if there is someone considering making one for themselves can they make two and i'll buy the other one.

Just thought i'd get in there quick as i'm sure there are a few of us who don't have welding and fabrication experience to do it themselves.

Hi Dean & Steve,
I won't be using the standard seat option & I understand that individuals will want different seat heights & widths etc etc..............
However, if you were to produce a basic frame along the lines as shown in the photos which locked into the tow bracket & "cantalevered" under the tender, I think most builders would then be in a position to add their own seats, single or double, high or low etc as they wish.
I personnely think that hanging a seat from the tender extention is asking quite alot of that part.
I'd rather pay you to come up with something, who know the engines, rather than someone else who don't!!

Tony,

Speaking to Steve this morning, he said that the seat arrangement will be different from the agricultural engine and it will be similar to the one in the picure. It won't hang of the tender bunker and will be of solid box section mounted in a similar way. It will be supplied with a single seat but hopefully easy then to convert to a double using the same framework. To be honest he said he's not really thought about it in great detail yet.

No need for anyone to start panicing, I know you are all keen to get finished but i'm sure whatever we send out will do the job or be very simple to alter to a twin.
