Re: Presedential Candidate??
Had a good steam up today as the forecast was good and the kettle needed testing, this is part of the road run we went on, second gear first then me and Andy in top. Few bits and pieces getting ready for the coming year.

Hi Kev,
Great video ,Is that the 4 note chime whistle you have fitted to your engine?
What do you think of it? I was thinking of getting one .
Thanks

Re: Presedential Candidate??
That is the 4 note whistle that comes from either Polly or Bruce engineering or one of the others, quite widely found I think, probably Barkers made or someone like that. Good thing about that is it screws straight into the existing valve, only needs a slight file where the base starts to cover the inlet in the valve base and restricts the steam. Needs quite a good pressure but does have a nicer sound on the ear than just a single whistle.
Going stir crazy now for a rally!!! Been out and cleaned the Ifor Williams today for the coming year, found a few bits I had forgotten about!!!!!

Re: Presedential Candidate??
My wife hates the siren and I cant get enough of it!! Broken the chain at the moment otherwise I would have used it on Saturday. Trying to locate a stronger but small link chain to replace it, does anyone know where I can find a small possibly welded link maybe stainless chain?? Been thinking about model boat supplies but dont know quality of chain.
Re: Presedential Candidate??
Kev,
From what pressure is the 4 chime effective?

Re: Presedential Candidate??
Kev,
I bought a stronger chain from LSM after breaking mine when using a 1/4" whistle valve from Heritage which has a much stronger spring to close the valve. Works really wel, is brass, has bigger links that are soldered. Page 38 on their catalogue. I went for 18swg size - priced all the same.

Re: Presedential Candidate??
Hi,
Is that the larger of the two whistles from Polly?
Did you use the valve supplied by STW or buy a new one?
How about the siren is that from R.A. Barker?
Cheers

Re: Presedential Candidate??
Siren fro R A Barker is wonderful. Plumbs straight into the spare hole on the block with the supplied valve.

Clearly that will be another excuse to get up some steam Once the kettle is finished and we need a cuppa then I will certainly have another steam up, currently taking down a wall at home and replacing and redecorating so the next couple of weeks are busy plus I dont want to hack the neighbours off so give it a couple of weeks.

Yes the larger of the two and yes straight into the STW valve but the base of the whistle needs a small slot filed in it to stop it covering the inlet hole in the valve.

Bit of housekeeping
Found a number of bolts going rusty mainly due to not painting them after fitting and having run around at Portsmouhth with a lot of salt on the road due to the sub zero temperatures, so sorted some stainless bolts and have had them black nickel plated to replace the bolts on the rollers and the brake tubes and had the roller pins done, you can see the state of the brake tube bolts in the final picture. Also pictured here is the finished seat bracket with the addition of the brackets for the number plate, used some 5mm mild steel and welded it firmly in place. Looks like there will be a couple of events at the end of March and into April
Also was very disappointed to see the first big ring gear going rusty so elected the have that one nickel plated too, looks a bit bright at the moment but it will dull down quite quickly with use and oil, didnt do the others as they are more protected then the outer one and had no signs of rust on them and didnt want to dismantle the whole lot. Before anyone points it out Yes the washer and bolt for the brake lever need doing and will be added when I take The Colemans next batch to the platers, I have also found a couple of other bits that I missed too.

Re: Presedential Candidate??
Got a clean pass yesterday, in the absolute pouring rain Andy came up and we did the normal safety blowing off, gauge glass working, both water feeds working so all good. Was nice to get a steam fix but really wanted to drive around but the rain didnt let up until I was half way home when the sun broke through the clouds....typical!!
Weather was so poor and I had an evening arrangement which meant I couldnt get to the Wilton do, a shame as it looks like I missed out on real good show and I have a soft spot for scale fair models, would love to have the patience to build one. Now looking forward to Basingstoke on the 13 - 14 April regardless of the weather!! Having tested the gazebo in the most horrid conditions we can survive almost anything... should have a new organ to showcase which is currently nearing completion and the showmans can be seen and heard.
