Congratulations
Kev
Congratulations, you have built yourself a traction engine to be proud of and it looks brilliant. I agree with you about the roof, it does look good but it hides the traction engines working parts and makes it a problem to drive. Your idea of removing the roof when you are driving your traction engine is the best idea. I look forward to seeing it in steam again at the Amberly Chalk Pits rally at the end of the summer, if you haven’t already worn it out by then running it 24/7!!
Well done.
Bill

Re: Presedential Candidate??
Whats the amberly rally like?
was thinking of taking my little 3" burrell there next year
heard lots of rules and regulations, i prefer a more relaxed event.
but having never been I dont know
Thanks

Re: Presedential Candidate??
For me there is never an issue with Rules and Regs they are a very relaxed bunch. Lots of driving about, all tarmac so no need to worry about weather. They are a working museum open to the public so they ask that car movement is restricted till after 4.30 ish for the usual Health and Safety reasons, not unlike most rallies asking not to leave too early. My opinion is its worth the visit, look forward to seeing you then.
Re: Presedential Candidate??
Thanks for the info

Re: Presedential Candidate??
Also the museum itself is exceptionally interesting, a working narrow gauge railway, old time print shop, brick works, hall of comms featuring fully working and visible telephone exchange, hall of electricity and lots of old time crafts, a really enjoyable event for the kids too, they spend ALL day on the trambus which is free to use. One of our favourite rallies. September the 15th or thereabouts ( 3rd weekend in september usually)
Re: Presedential Candidate??
I agree with Kevins comments. This is one of our favourite rallies of the year. It’s quite a long drive for us to attend but it allows us the opportunity to see people and traction engines that we do not normally see during the rest of the year. It also allows us the chance to catch up with how Kevin is getting on with his traction engine and organs. This rally is just for miniature tractions engines and everything is laid on for us, rather that being the poor relation to full size engines. As for rules and regulations we have never had any problems. They do have the normal Health and Safety rules to make certain that everyone has a good time but that’s all. The staff at the museum are always very friendly to us and encourage us to steam around the site as much as possible. This site has an extensive network of roadways you can use and there is also an interesting hill up to the upper car park which allows you to test your engine!! The museum is worth a visit and looking around, which you can do by steaming from one exhibition to another during the day.

Re: Presedential Candidate??
Kev, They do supply coal, I will find an email for you.
Been on the roof for the last few days, glued it all together and painted it in primer this afternoon. Decided to go for the calico covering and possibly grey or black as the rest of the engine is not wipe clean!!! More authentic
Bought the black and red so hopefully have colour by the New Year.
Happy Xmas to all

Re: Presedential Candidate??
Thanks Lynn, wont be long till I can show you a complete engine!!!!
Been on the roof for the last few days painting and then lighting a fire to help dry out. Should be possible to fit perhaps tomorrow or Saturday depending on if I want to mark the soft paint!!!
The inky black is so nice against the almost shocking red but all this stuff looks great before it gets all covered in crud!! Will be lined as per "President" and then will be signed but I will use vinyl as I want a good sharp edge on the letters and I am not confident that I can get a good finish with paint or leaf.
Not sure about the topside though, funny finish to it now I have put undercoat on it, perhaps that was a mistake?? Probably won't matter when it's all crud soaked!!!!

Re: Presedential Candidate??
Incredibly one coat of Crown "One Coat" gloss on white undercoat!!!! That actually does what it says on the tin and covers really well. Eye wateringly red!!! Even redder in real life.
The pictures say it all
I have modified the seat bracket as this is where I am comfy for driving, cut the diagonals up and reset them and welded the tow brackets properly as it will take a fair load.
This is the view with the roof at the supplied height which is completely impracticle for driving, its is such a dangerous thing and needs total concentration to be in control to avoid damaging the engine or worse a person. The iron work completely restricts the reach for the regulator and the roof pokes right in the chin and chest.
Experimental position using 8mm posts to raise the roof by about 4.5", still makes driving difficult but gives a better view of the moving stuff.
Going to wait for the paint the harden before I line the sides and front, top is still in undercoat but seems to look better with a light sanding and I will then paint in grey first maybe black later.

Well done Kev, unless anyone knows any different, I guess you are in "pole position" regarding the DCC build from STW........Pretty good advert for all to see
It's going to be quite a year for you in 2013

Re: Presedential Candidate??
Thanks all very pleased with the results of all the hard work, and yes the seat is very frim now, wont be bending when were both sat on it Andy, and wont bash your knees on the bit sticking out the back.
Tony, as far as I know unless someone says otherwise I am the first to the finish post although it wasnt a race!!! I just cant sit and " vegitate " I need to do " Stuff " Concerned as to what I will do with all the hours now!! Need to build another organ, so I'm going to put out a few ads to see if there are any takers.
As for next year Andy will tell you I have already made a list of the events to visit and there is almost something every weekend from mid June to September. Need to put the STW day on it though as I really want to meet all the other builders. Need to fit the odometer now so I can find out how many miles I cover and top speed!!!

Annual New Year / Xmas outing
Although not quite New Year this year we always have a day steam up at a local friends at a small village near Singleton. He has several vintage tractors which get an outing as well and the kids have a great time too!!!
The gang just after raising steam, ready for the off.
Leaving the village for a run about 6 - 7 miles.
A quick stop to make sure all is well, getting through a bit of water today but working hard with hills and a load.
At the top of a 3/4 mile hill climb in third the new powder coating on the chimney has had a bit of a beating, started to liquifiy at the base!!!! Thats bloody hot then it cures at 260 C. But it was worth a try, will stick with it for the time being I doubt it will work as hard in the season.
Back at the yard, the right place for a picture to keep no crappy Vectras or front doors in the back ground!! As STW DONT do mugs this one is going on one from Tescos as a pressy to myself
Final blow down for 2012, could be up to 12 weeks before there is an actual date on the calender Wont be able to hold out for that long without a steam up....
Kids having a bit of fun on the tractors and a ride on mower ( without blades before H + S get funny!!!! )
I got to take the Allis back to its shed, not so sure about this new fangled infernal combustion though!!!!!!
A Happy and Peaceful New Year to all builders and readers alike, hope to meet up with as many of you as poss during 2013, if you are at a do I am at come and make your self known, we'll put the kettle on.
