Friday 11th Nov '16 - Bushes in & Hub caps now fit. First time I have ever used my Dads old Myford lathe was tonight to skim up the hub caps on a Model Traction engine. I think he would have been happy seeing it put to that use.

Re: Project 4" (1/3 Full Size) Burrell Agricultural Traction Engine Build.
Think you will be pleasantly surprised with the Craftmaster coach enamel.
You'll soon get the hang of it. Best thing is not to play with it. Don't pile it on but work reasonably quick.
Leave any runs and rub down later, rather than trying to brush them out as the paint is going off.
The Purdy brushes aren't cheap but well worth it having tried cheaper synthetic brushes.
Also using the brush mate extends the life of the brush.
The Craftmaster varnish is probably the best varnish I have ever used. It's great on wood.
Good luck, and enjoy the build.
Regards
Jim

Thank you Jim & Livesteam.
Axel 31mm thick + 2x bushes 3mm thick = 37mm . Gap in fork = 33mm. This doesn't add up

Looking better after machining 5 or 6mm off the Axel, needed more than hand tools to do this !

Re: Project 4" (1/3 Full Size) Burrell Agricultural Traction Engine Build.
Ok so far to get the wheels to fit/turn I have had to bore out the outer covers of the wheels by a good 1/2mm (glad I had not finished the wheels !), skimmed a bit off the length of the wheel retaining collars & put a flat on the wheel retaining pins . Anyone else had to do the same ?

Re: Project 4" (1/3 Full Size) Burrell Agricultural Traction Engine Build.
when I did my front axel I machined a grove in the axel for a "o" ring to seal the rear of the wheel to stop oil leaking out and made a gasket for the hubcap to stop oil leaking out the front

DCC front axle
I'm also doing the axle kit but for a 4" DCC. I notice that you have a bush for the axle pin which appears not to be the case with the DCC . I wonder why as I would have thought that a pin straight through the axle was a point of wear.

The Roller does look good NorfolkModelSteam nearly went for that myself, looking forward to seeing your build
