Bill's 6" Foden SWB Lorry

I suppose it would be interesting for future people to find my body buried under a ruddy great Scottish hill cairn with a 6" engine tucked up along side rather than a pile of soggy bank notes......... Well, when I say "pile", does two notes balanced on top of each other count?
Would love to go to 6" but where do I store it?

I have managed an interesting week-end assembling the new parts on my lorry. It is good at last to see it grow and it will be even better when we reach the stage where we can wheel it about, which will not be too far away. At the moment I feel more like a car mechanic than a steam engineer which is proving to be an interesting experience. The front axle of the lorry is going to be on show all the time and it really does look good. When we get further on with the build I will consider if I will have the front axle lined.





As the shed I am building my lorry in is a little bit cramped I had a problem photographing the rear springs and axle box. So I hope that this photo gives you some idea of what they look like.



This will be my last posting for some time as I am going into hospital tomorrow to have an operation on my right shoulder, which will be followed by an operation on my right elbow and then my right wrist, I hope all before Christmas. As I am right handed I am going to be out of action for about four months OR more importantly for the next 4 kits. I know that I am going to be watch like a hawk if I walk anywhere near my workshop so life is going to be a pain in more ways than one. I expect that by the time I can start building again I will know the new kit instructions word perfect as I will have read then so many times!! These hospital operations were planned to take place at this time as my recovery will be outside of the steam rally time.

Wow, looks magnificent, you managed to turn it up the right way then!! Is that why you need your right side fixing
Seriously, hope all goes well with the op's & I can sympathise with your frustrations as far as the build is concerned. (I bet that's not the only frustration you'll have to face!!)
I think lining would look good, particularly at this scale.

Build looks really nice, a chap I know (about five miles from where I live) is also building a 6" lorry, so I will be kept up to date on the build.

just noticed on the rear hub track rod bracket, you have an extra hole going through the chassis bracket? whats that for if you don't mind me asking?

I have to confess that I have no idea what the extra hole in the braket is for. When I fitted the tension bar I checked the plans, that we have so far but they give no idea. The extra hole is larger than the one used to secure one end of the tension bar so it is going to be a large bolt or bar.

just wonder what the difference would be between the lwb and swb.

Wonder if its support for the rear drawbar?

I want to fit a removeable towball on the back so need to think about some sort of bracing.

My kit 9 arrived this morning but I will be unable to start work on it for some time yet as I am still unable to use my right arm as a result of an operation on my shoulder. I asked the van driver to loan the kit onto my trolley so that I could wheel it to my workshop. I was then able to empty the box one handed, item by item and to put them onto my work bench. I was unable to lift the rear axle on my own but that is now in the workshop. The items in this kit look great and I look forward to seeing photos as other builder put it together. Having read the instructions it would appear that for once it will be an advantage not to be able to build this kit until the next kit arrives as the rear wheels may have to come off in order to fit the brakes.

After an enforced absence from my workshop it was good to-day to spend some time constructing the rear axle and differential for my Foden Lorry. I am hoping tomorrow to be able to fit the axle to the chassis and if possible to fit the rear wheels. I am going to need the assistance of my apprentice, as the rear axle is very heavy but at least I will then have all four wheels on my lorry and I will be able to move it around. We have been told that the rear wheels will have to come off when we get the brakes in the next kit but it will be good to see the lorry on all four wheels for the first time.

how did today go?

I'm just painting my rear axle and cant wait to see it on its wheels and give an impression of what it will be like!

After a longer than expected days working on my Foden lorry it has now got the rear axle and wheels fitted. It was certainly not a one person job and my apprentice did a sterling job in helping me. It’s now good to be able to push the chassis in and out of the shed. I can’t wait to see the size of the drive chain that we are going to be supplied with to fit around the rear sprocket. I am going to the STW factory on Tuesday to pickup the next Foden kit and will post some photos as soon as I have unpacked the kit. If I find out any more news I will let you know.

how smooth is your diff? I cant make out if mine seems to be catching the cover or not. i havent filled with oil as planned yet until its painted. it is fairly well greased though.

the other thing I noticed is the central beam on your chassis is the other way up to mine? is this a difference in the lwb and swb or does one of us have it wrong? mines so it would catch liquid so to speak. you can see it on my pics.

I have checked the plans of my SWB lorry and the central bar is shown as being the correct way up. As you say this must be a difference between the SWB and the LWB lorries. When I constructed my dif it was difficult to tell if it was smooth running or not. As I spent longer than expected today fitting the rear axle and wheels I did not have time to test it. Also I have not yet bolted the rear wheels onto the axle, as they will be coming off again in order to fit the brakes. I expect that everything is going to be very tight to start with. I will let you know how I get on.

PS Just remembered the pictures posted on the forum of the STW control models.

Mine wasnt tight, but fairly notchy. Now I've put the covers on I cant make my mind up if its catching them, or they are amplifing the noise so to speak.

I found the use of some engine build lub on all the parts which required oil made it everything turn smoothly on its own. Just once all meshed there was some noise.

Strange detail about that centre brace! Glad ours are both right.

Hopefully by the end of the month I'll be in a similar position.

I went to the STW factory today to collect kit 10 for my Foden Lorry. I have not, as yet had time to look at the parts fully or to read the instructions although I may do that this evening. All I can say at the moment is that there are a large number of very interesting parts and a lot of instructions. This kit looks as if it is going to be fun to clean and install. Whilst I was at the factory I also took the opportunity to look at the lorry control models to see what this kit looks like when fitted. As the control models are ‘work in progress’ I was unable to take any clear pictures unfortunately. Also part of the braking system is inside the rear wheels.









You can just see part of one of the brake shoes in the bottom left hand side of this picture.

I have at last started to make some headway with kit 10 of my lorry. This kit is taking me longer than I expected to prepare even before I am able to start assembling it. The kit consists of the breaking system, which will be rather important as our lorries will be both heavy and capable of a good turn of speed. The lorry braking system will also make a nice change from my traction engine brakes that don’t really work. The lorry has two breaking systems on the rear wheels and axle. The rear wheels have brake drums and shoes. Besides having to clean the brake shoe castings they need friction material bonded to them and then bolted in place with brass nuts and bolts. The second brake is a band brake onto a drum attached to the rear axle. All of these parts are very heavy and along with the rear axle they will hold the rear of the lorry on the ground when we are driving it.



This shows a brake shoe and the friction materiel that has to be bonded and bolted to the shoe. The rear brake shoe in the picture is completed.



This is the rear band brake and drum which will be attached to the rear axle when painted.



This is the foot brake lever which we have been told we will not be using when we are driving the lorry. I have blunted the ratchet teeth!!



This picture shows the rear wheel brake drums and the fitting bolted to the top of the axle box for the rear band brake. You can also see the key way in the rear axle for attaching the rear brake drum.

This is a really good informative thread on your build, very clear & interesting & shows what an impressive lorry STW are turning out for those of you lucky enough to be building them!!
