help paint

hi all could some one tell me what paint for chimney and smoke boxs and all outher hot parts what temp do i need to go to and i'm looking at a gloss finish as trying to order from craftmaster paints

Hi Richard

You will need a VHT (very High Temperature Paint). I got mine from Frost.co.uk, but I have a satin finish rather than gloss.

Obviously this is direct on to the metal, no primer needed. There are others on the market and I'm sure other builders can advise what they used. This was the only paint I didnT get from Craftmaster, but Adam is very helpful and I feel sure if you gave him a call he could also advise what they can supply to you for the job.

I used halfords engine paint, out of the tin i poured it straight into my gun. came out with a really nice even finish, this paint does state 300c on the tin but i have used this on my v8 exhausts and got up to well over 500c, this paint still hasn't shifted. its good stuff. also if you have a halfords trade card its rather cheap

Hi Richard,
I,ve done my chimney & smoke box in Plasticote stove black, which is matt black, then before the paint is fully hardened off, I've given it the lightest of coats of Hammerite gloss black!! You end up with a high temp gloss, which looks pretty good.
Both are arosols paints available from B&Q.

Craftmaster Gloss 240 would i think be suitable. Its what we suggest to most people. I doubt a model will get much hotter than that, most full size engines do not.

I used Plastikote BBQ paint from an aerosol on my 4" Burrell. It produced a really nice satin finish and has proved to be very durable apart from it wearing off the heads of the large rivet bolts around the smoke box due to frequent cleaning. I have been told subsequently that removing the plating from the rivet bolt heads before painting would have prevented this from happening as the paint is intended for direct contact with steel.

Hi Richard
I used RUST-OLEUM topcoat heat resistant 7778. It comes in a 500ml spray can. It is heat resistant up to750 c. It is a silk finish and costs £11 per can and is made to spray on to bare metal.I bought mine from my local paint store (BREWERS) in Salisbury. I am very pleased with the finnish it is perfect and is very easy to use.
