Third gear selection

Dear all,
I have been trying to get the third gear selector to work. It slides out of gear easily but will not budge going into gear. However, the gear slides easily if pushed with a finger in either direction.

I have retried to bend the mounting pivot as suggested in the instructions this has eased it slightly.

Any suggestions please

I have also inserted a "fat" washer under the pivot point. This made my third go from work one way only to free moving.

Mine is pretty tricky and needs a hand on it to get it out. If you look at Tim's thread he has tried an alternative solution which involved filing the fork. It worked , but not it has a tendency to rattle!

Thanks for the suggestions I will try the washer on the pivot point, I had thought about filling the fork making the center thinner so that the tips only try to move the gear. My thinking is that this would not try to tip the gear over and jam is this what Tim did?

Ian, have to say that is what I did too, worked perfectly. Just an aside, I also put a shim under the crankshaft bearing at that end of the crank, just to slightly increase the centre distance between the crank gears & the gears they drive on the second shaft, this also made gear changing a lot easier!!

My third was very tight and I got some wet and dry about 400 - 600 and gently sanded the carrier hub and in side the ring gear. I also took the sharp edges off the splines on the hub. All this helped to make it easier but also after 18 months or so it has freed up considerably with use.
