I spoke to phoenix paints at the show today they say thier gloss paint is ok for the smoke box and chimney e.c.t and wont burn off is this true or should i go for a 240 or 500 degree gloss from craftmaster or other manufacture. Also what about the fire box and boiler. Suggestions would be helpful as i dont want it burning off on my first steam.

WE WERE TOLD THIS BY ONE OF THEIR 'STAFF' SOMETIME AGO, BUT WHEN I QUESTIONED CHRIS (THE BOSS) HE WAS NOT SO SURE. SO WE WENT FOR THE SMOKEBOX BLACK (SATIN) THAT REEVES DO. WILL SAY THAT IT GOES ON NICE, LOOKS GOOD, BUT AS YET WE'VE NOT 'SET FIRE' TO IT. JUST USED THE CRAFTMAN MATT HI-TEMP 300 ON OUR BOILER, AGAIN GOES ON NICE, BUT DOES NOT SEEM TO ADHERE AS WELL, DESPITE BEING ASSURED THAT IT DOES.

YOU PAYS YA MONEY, YA TAKES YA CHOICE ! Smile

If you mean Craftmaster Paints, these can be bought from Heritage Steam Supplies (www.heritagesteamsupplies.co.uk) and many other suppliers.

That will be the reason I cant find Craftman paints, the funny thing is everybody on this forum refers to the paint as Craftman not Craftmaster.

Many Thanks

HI VAPOR, YES INDEED IT IS REALLY CALLED CRAFTMASTER, NOT CRAFTMAN Embarassed . THE PHONE NUMBER IS 01384 485554, IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SPEAK TO THEM, RATHER THAN E-MAIL.
THEY NORMALLY HAVE A FULL OR HALF PAGE AD IN OLD GLORY (IF YOU READ FULL SIZE STEAM MAGS - NEVER SEEN THEM ADVERTISE IN THE MODEL MAGS)

I have just sprayed smoke box and chimney with Halfords High Temperature Engine Enamel paint it has been specially formulated to withstand temperatures of up to 450°C. it went on really well with a good finish, only time will tell.
