boiler design signed off !!!! Empty boiler design signed off !!!!

Post  craig@STW Wed 12 May 2010, 7:27 pm

as posted elsewhere, the boiler design has now been officially signed off and we are ordering materials already cheers

Steve seems unnaturally excited about this and has given me some facts to share with you.

the boiler barrel will be 267mm diameter with an 8mm wall thickness.

we have ordered 44 meters in four 11 meter lengths (don't know where he thinks thats going to fit in the factory Rolling Eyes ) weighing 2.3 tonnes. this is coming all the way from Germany !!!

the finished boilers will weigh... single cylinder= 90kg and showman's= 130kg

boiler design signed off !!!! Empty 22mm

Post  Steve Traill Wed 12 May 2010, 10:32 pm

Out of interest by my reckoning the new boiler for the Road Loco/Showmans will be 22mm larger in diameter than the single crank boilers. What is the weight of the Road Loco boiler though? Basketball

That is a seriously large piece of metal. The long firebox will be good for frying on the shovel and the big smokebox on the showmans will have plenty of space for roasting also.

Perhaps we should start a thread on TE cooking!

boiler design signed off !!!! Empty manhole real or not?

Post  sonick45 Sun 16 May 2010, 11:03 pm

Steve,

Just out of interest.

The manhole on top of the boiler appears to be blanked off.
Is the manhole cover on the top fake?

If it is, how do you clean inside the boiler and check for corrosion etc?

just a thought.

boiler design signed off !!!! Empty Manhole in boiler

Post  Steve Traill Mon 17 May 2010, 3:37 pm

Of all the stupid places to put a manhole Burrell got first prize for the daftest! Even if it were big enough in scale size to be of any use it's under all the motion work so that would have to be removed first. To actually put a real manhole there would be more of a liability than any practical use so there is a token dummy one there so it has the appearance of the full size. On my 4" I glued dummy rivet heads around the oval ring to make it look a bit more realistic. No doubt someone at Burrells thought that was the best place to put one, I don't think any other manufacturer did though.

I inspected the inside of my boiler last year using an endoscope: it looked fine. Having an accesible cover would have made no difference.

Not to sure how my local hospital would react if I pushed my engine into
A&E and asked for a boiler inspection?!! 
