Having reached 4 weeks in the build of my SCC I am quite pleased with the progress and have found that all the kits are of a very good quality.
I have managed to complete the front wheels, perch bracket, smokebox and chimney, one rear wheel, and kit 7 of the tender. Building the other rear wheel this week. Most of the parts have been primed.
Whilst building the wheels I machined just over 1mm off the rivet nuts until a 3/8 inch or 1BA socket fitted and this has saved a lot of work shaping after the rivets were fitted, giving a good final finish.
Have used the Plasticote satin black for the smokebox and baked in the oven for 1 hour whilst the coast was clear. Chimney will be painted and placed on the logburner soon when it gets fired up.
No major problems so far.
I will post some photos when I have worked out how to upload them

First 4 weeks of build. Empty Smokebox holes

Post  tony.wheels Tue 02 Nov 2021, 10:13 pm

Just a quick one, there are 2 holes pre-drilled in the smokebox for a walkboard, as per the instuctions. As there is no walkboard on this model, what have other builders done to fill the holes. Screws and grinding flat or JB weld or better options please.

Hi Tony,

On my one I welded the holes up and filed flush to the smokebox.
I know when it was first highlighted bolts were supplied to fill the holes but I didn't like the idea or 2 random bolt heads on the smokebox.

Suppose if you didn't have a welder you could tap the holes and locktite in a stud and file flush and smooth off?

Wouldn't like to say how well filler would work with the heat but JB Weld might work.
