oil pump setting Empty oil pump setting

Question to the experienced builders
I mounted a Foster lubricator of livesteammodels. I removerd the pipe from the one way valve on the cylinder and counted the revolutions of the oiler ratched lever between oil drops. Initially I had set the oil pump to a maybe too high setting, as I assumed for run in there should be a ample supply.

By now Pied Piper has done several runs and empies the cylinder oiler quite quickly.

So to what amount did you set the oiler on your engine?

Thanks

HI Elwood

By changing the lengths of the fulcrum you can change the number of clicks on the ratchet with each stroke.
Then you can adjust the ram position in the tank to pump less or more on each revolution.

On Crystal I emptied the tank ever 90 minutes of reasonable crank speed. 5 mph in 2nd to give a gauge.

If you undo the locking nut on the back of the lubricator you can wind the threaded part in more that will also reduce the amount of oil being pushed through, it’s a fine balancing act between too much and not enough. If anything though too much is better than not enough.

Hi,

thanks for the suggestions. I already adjusted the lubricator partially. At this moment the feed is set at „too much“ - yes better than too little Very Happy

As is it‘s set right now it will empty the tank in about 10 minutes Embarassed

So will fiddle with it to get the consumption down somewhat.

Thanks

One point to remember is generally the more oil going through the more often you may find the chimney will need cleaning, recently pulled mine off the agri to find I was down to one small 25-30mm hole through the oil encrusted soot, and I wondered why it wasnt drawing well Rolling Eyes

Hence my question as I can see the soot slowly building up in the chimney. Not as bad (yet) but worth monitoring! What a Face

Cheers

Keep an eye on the chimney throat, thats where I find it bungs up the most, I run a fairly high oil through put and while chimney itself doesnt get massively choked the area around the blast pipe and blower pipe is the area which cloggs up.
