Chimney extension
Hi all,
Last kit arrived and parts fitted, one question should there be a chimney extension supplied by STW ?

Chimney Extension
I asked the same question, there is no extension for the Agricultural Engine. Dean replied that the cardboard roll from inside of a carpet was the best thing to use. I happen to have some aluminium and a nice scuttle handle so I'm going to make one.

Re: Chimney extension
The first steam instructions provided by STW do mention that STW will provide an extension, but I haven't asked. Instead I made my own using a sheet of 0.9mm x 1000mm x 400mm sheet steel.

You will need to find someone with a roller to shape it.
I used 3mm bolts the same as was used on the chimney.

Re: Chimney extension
I just have a bit of 4" Sprial ducting about 6 foot long, dirt cheap and works a treat, also doubles up as a chimney for the wood burner we take to the shows for evening chats around the stove.

Re: Chimney extension
One metre of 4" stove pipe fits well with three rivets in the base to stop it wobbling. The cardboard tube from a carpet works well but goes a bit manky after a while.

Re: Chimney extension
I've also a short length of spiral duct for the chimney extension. The trees around my garden cause a problem with down draft on windy days.

Re: Chimney extension
Pretty much what you saw mine with at Twyford, although maybe not that long mines about 5 feet but works a treat and the stuffs so cheap.
My extension also doubles up as the gas bottle wood burner chimney for those chilly rally evenings, always good to have something that can be used for more than one job.

Re: Chimney extension
Yep, its quite a common sight, and as you say not very expensive solution. Especially as there is often a few lengths which end up in the skip at the end of a contract.

Re: Chimney extension
Been thinking about your super long Spiral duct extension and thought you might want to watch out it doesnt draw it to hard and to quick in the early part of firing, I know my far shorter length can make mine draw pretty hard once its warm and I always pull it off as soon as its got the slightest whisp of pressure on the gauge, although due to my boiler being a very early one and it having copper tubes I'm always very wary of a raging fire in the early stages.
Just might be worth thinking about ?

My chimney extension using some thick walled carpet cardboard tube. Its 650mm long and has lasted 2½ years so far, with plenty of life left in it yet. The length has proven to be more than adequate when firing up, about 45mins from fire lit to the pressure gauge showing 10psi. The best feature is the fact that it cost… zilch. Some of the longer tubes I have seen put quite a stress on the chimney tube to base casting fixings causing loosening of the joint.
My pennies worth…. Now using Imgur to host images.
