New kid on the block

Just wanted to say hello. Been to Daventry on Friday and picked up my first kits for my 4" DCC Road Loco.

Nice people, very welcoming and helpful.

At the same time I would like to thank all of you I talked for your encouragement and friendly words. Kev, Collin, Simon, Paul and all the others - yes, I am the guy with the white beard from Germany bothering you at different rallys, asking many questions.  

And to all the others out there I yet have to meet, thanks for the support you've given to others asking questions and I hope, should I get myself in a tight corner, somebody out there can tell me how to get out of it.

Looking forward to years of pleasure of building and steaming.

I'm building a 4" Agri and enjoying every minute.
The quality of the work from STW is excellent, but on the very odd occasion there is an issue you will find after sales service is brilliant.

Hi everybody,

Just a quick update. Been busy with setting up the workshop while moving from company office to home office, storing some of the paperwork brought home in the garage/Workshop. I still managed to get the rear wheels prepared to a state in which I can start to assemble them. Cleaning the rim with wire brush and flap wheel as the spokes worked out good. The trick to put the spokes into patio cleaner was the right hint, the mill scale just washed off, very easy and quick.  

At this moment I am wondering if I should also use JB weld to attach the spokes not only to the hubs but also to the rim; I see different ways here. My main concern is to get the surplus JB weld off and to get the paint to stick later on. I am not sure if the additional effect of the "glue" together with the bolts is really needed. Any input welcome.

Finger wrapped in a baby wipe smooths the jb weld and keeps it off your hands.

Thanks, good remark. Did you attach the spokes to the rims with adhesive or did you go only with the bolts?

Plenty of jb weld to fill the gaps and leave a fillet where the spokes leave the hub.

might have been a bit unclear   , I meant fixing the spokes to the rim is what I am uncertain, spokes to hub I was planning to use the jb weld.

The slotless screws are plenty strong enough to hold the spokes correctly. I used 2 hour epoxy and smeared a bit on the spoke before setting in to place. Just to stop any moisture getting behind the spoke. Also zinc primed the mating surfaces before inserting.

The filling of the hub slots etc with epoxy is just to get the "cast in" spoke look and stop moisture getting in and oil getting out.

so I think I will go the whole nine yards, epoxy on hub and rim side.

I planed on priming the rims, too, but then I also should do the spokes, makes no sense to do only one mating surface .
