fillet rouding off Empty fillet rouding off

ive seen on other topics of the forum about using JB weld, although in the instructions I believe it says to use car body filler i'm guessing the body filler is like p38 or is it of other kind ??? also would p38 do the trick as there's plenty of it in my late granddads shed which the engines being built in Smile

After using P38 & JB weld I have used Pink Grip successfully on about a dozen wheels now. I found the P38 a bit brittle as the rims are not fully welded and when one is a bit heavy with the rivet dolly it can crack, also the sanding part is tiresome. Also JB weld works out a bit pricey and can also crack. The Pink grip sets hard for paint but not a brittle hard, it's easy to apply from a gun, cheap and easy to finish. I thoroughly cleaned the rims of rust, oil & gunge, degrease with gun wash and apply a thinnish bead of Pink Grip to about a quarter of the rim. It skins up really quick in air & if left for more than about 30 seconds when you try & smooth it it drags & looks terrible. The easy way to do it is to have a little bowl of white spirit handy and use this with a correct size finger for the radius required & smooth it out (no sanding required). By doing a quarter at a time it's quite easy & then leave for 24 hours before fitting the spokes. You can then bash away without fear of anything cracking, well I did anyway! Basketball

I found body filler cracked off the rim when I banged the rivets home and was a nightmare on the fronts. After speaking to others at GDSF on the rears I used JB weld and it worked much better, no cracking.

fillet rouding off Empty JB Weld

I have just come up from the kitchen after filleting and I used JB Weld too.

I only managed three of the four fillets on the front wheels as I ran out of the JB Weld, it took 2 pairs of tubes to get that far. My local shops are now closed so I'll try my local car guy or B&Q tomorrow.

Any idea how many tubes I'm going to need for the rear wheels when they arrive, or are there tubs of the stuff available?

I got hold of some pink grip as dad got it through his company and its worked spot on although i didnt use white spirit to smooth it off i just followed dad round woth filleting tool as its applying it looks spot on to be honest theres a few iffy areas altho bit of paint wont notice a thing got my second wheel built up now Smile

Have a look on ebay you can get the industrial size tubes of jb weld
works out cheaper than buying lots of small tubes.
get some baby wipes to finish of the fillet too, select a finger wrap a wipe around it and and run
around to jb weld to finish off, keeps your fingers clean too.

I did use the Wet Wipes and they are quite amazing at cleaning up the JB Weld.

Acetone also cleans up smears of cured JB which was handy because I got some on the kitchen work surface, luckily I spotted this before my wife did other wise the next fillet would be done out doors and in the cold. I really do advocate JB weld as I have used it to repair stud holes in engines, vice jaws and many other metallic items, but prior to this there was a product called Molecular Metal which came in two tubs and that was industrial quality as we used it at work.

All looking good just needs a sand and then onto the spokes.
