Wheel Rims Fillet.
Steve,
A couple of months ago when we were at the St Agnes CMSEC meeting, I am sure that you reccomemded using an epoxy steel for making the inner wheel fake wheel fillets as it was water soluble.
Please can you let me know what the make was that you reccomended as I expect to start my main wheels build very soon.
I hope that you have a great 2012
Cheers
Malcolm

Wheel fillets
Hi Frostie
I have found that JB Weld is ideal for creating the fillets as it's very strong, easily mixed and using a small piece of 8 or 10mm microbore copper pipe as a spatula easy to apply (curve the pipe slightly so it doesn't leave marks). Also being water based after using the pipe to give the correct radius and a flat knife to remove any surplus from the edges a wet finger applied to a spinning wheel leaves virtually no sanding afterwards. When I used the car body filler on the first ones the sanding was a real pain and difficult to get an even redius. Also I would suggest a small container of water to make a wet finger as the JB Weld tastes vile!

Fillets
One final thing after smoothing it with a wet finger, remove the surplus water with kitchen towel and place near a fan heater to dry the remaining water off quickly (a few minutes is all thats needed) so the wheel doesn't go rusty. It's amazing who quickly bare metal will rust

Re: Wheel Rims Fillet.
Cheers Steve,
Thats brilliant mate, I used car filler on my front wheels and found it a real pain, I am sure that most of the new 4" batch builders will be much appreciative for the info..
Is the next CMSEC meeting on the 30th of this month ??
All the best

Re: Wheel Rims Fillet.
I used jb weld on my wheels to produce the fillet.
if you get some cheap baby wipes ,hold onto finger then wizz around the jb weld it leaves a nice raduis and doesnt get all over your fingers.
if you get just the right amount of jb weld on there in the first place not much is wasted at all.
you might need to keep finding a fresh bit of wipe if it builds up a bit.
works for me
hope it helps

Re: Wheel Rims Fillet.
Forgot to add,
I mixed the jb weld and spooned it into a large plastic syringe, then I could run a nice bead all around the wheel then finish off with my baby wipe covered finger.
it takesa while to go off so I found I had plenty of time

Re: Wheel Rims Fillet.
Hi all,
For the filler on the wheels I used car filler works well and sticks to anything, a bit of a rub down and paint, it looks like one wheel piece. Still take Steve's advise as it tastes like S^%$£. Did you also get a tool to help make the fill around the wheel? It comes with the front wheel kit on the DCC. Don't do what I did, I did the rear wheels first and opened the kit for the front wheels after getting my hands, clothes and parts of the house covered in filler. The first comment in this kit was the mentioning of use of the filler tool

Re: Wheel Rims Fillet.
Watch out if you use body filler you may find it cracks when you try and push the rivets through to fit the spokes to the rim. On our front wheels we had real trouble. After speaking to Steve we used jb weld on the real wheel, which took more abuse and was fine.
Re: Wheel Rims Fillet.
Kevster,
Where did you get your plastic syringe from mate ??? Sounds like a very good idea.

I might give JB Weld a go on the rears then if it's that easy! Anyone want a little-used pot of Dinitrol?

Re: Wheel Rims Fillet.
The syringe i used had been knocking around for ages,i had silver solder paste in its first life.
I cleaned it out and used it for the fillets, its about 1" diameter and 4" long, I cut the nozzle bigger so i could lay a nice bead around the wheel.
im not sure where you might buy one from ,maybe ebay might have some, i know they do glass syringes that will also work.
just make sure you give it a good cleaning with the wipes before it sets and its good to go for next time.

Q: How many tubes of JB Weld?
I'm going to have a go at this tonight. How many tubes (I'm counting 1 packet as one tube even though there are two!! ) of JB Weld do people think you need for 4 fillets? i.e. To do one rear wheel? I've only got about 3/4 of a tube(s) left and I reckon that probably would only do, at most, one fillet.
Thanks!
Dan

Re: Wheel Rims Fillet.
You have that about right, I found it took most of a tube to do one fillet. It may be worth getting the industrial pack size,

Re: Wheel Rims Fillet.
I used the industrial size pack too, once its mixed and in your syringe its easy to lay a bead around the wheel and finish of with a baby wipe covered finger.
