3rd gear - crankshaft
for all those further on than me, a little help would be appreciated. The third gear hits the bearing housing/hornplate, does it need to fully go into the hole i.e. the teeth as well as the movement ring (hopefully that makes sense)

Re: 3rd gear - crankshaft
Hi Simon
Yes the gear needs to go almost fully in to the bearing casting. I think you should find that the point of contact is the adjusting Alan bolt for the crank bearing. I ground the head of mine down to lower than half. It was catching in the inside.
Also you will more than likely need to pack under the crank bearing to release the gear pack as on most engines the mesh was too deep to allow gear change. This would also lift the gear away from the bearing casting bottom where you show a touch.

Without 2nd shaft and main gears
Everything in running order.
Hope this helps.

Re: 3rd gear - crankshaft
Thanks Lynn, yes that is very helpful.
I have already followed your earlier post and reduced the length of the bearing adjuster screw. I took off a couple of threads and reduced the nut size. I can get the gear carrier fully in, and the gear moving ring, but not the gear it self. Looking on your pictures I am in almost as far as you. I can certainly move the gear out of mesh.
I haven't looked at the gear change kit yet (I do have it though), are the locking positions pre set or is that a job for the kit builder?
Did you have to take the crank out to pack it?
Thanks for your help.
Best wishes
Simon

Re: 3rd gear - crankshaft
The lock positions are done at the factory but my levers etc would not set correctly, Steam Traction World do send templates out for you to use if you need a different hole setup produced. You can see the offset marks on the previous pictures. I just weld filled the holes, normalised the metal and did it myself. I have an extra hole for 3rd as it does not share a hole. I found the shared hole put a lot of tension on 3rd when meshed.
On packing the crank. Have you done the mod to the 3rd gear carrier? I with help from a second set of hands slipped packing in by easing the crank up without taking the bearing packs apart.
Also notice the extra washer used as a spacer to hold 1st and the bare metal area where the gear levers rest on the casting. Without the spacer 2nd would not mesh fully as to move 1st and 2nd they rely on each other for the pivot point and 1st was going too far out.
