Re: DVLA Registration.
You also need to send:
Forms, as outlined by Lynn above.
Photograph of boiler plate showing STW number, in situ on the engine.
Some good portrait pictures of the engine making it look big: A4 size.
A letter from STW stating that it is a new build.
A letter from STW stating that it will not exceed 20mph.
Insurance certificate.
Boiler test certificate: this could be the original STW hydraulic or the in-steam one
Cheque for £55 (currently).
Took a couple of weeks in my case. No inspection requested.

Re: DVLA Registration.
****** As of the 1st Jan 2014 ******
Your engine needs to have a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), which must be stamped on to your boiler. This number will be provided to you by DVLA after you have submitted the forms and supporting evidence, as mentioned in the posts above.
(Note: I also had to produce a certificate stating the weight of the engine.)
The letter containing the VIN, is returned to DVLA with a rubber stamp and signature from a garage to say the VIN has been stamped on correctly.
After this process is complete, you will then receive your registration mark. I have just gone through the whole 'painful' process and DVLA have confirmed the approval of a XX14 plate .

Re: DVLA Registration.
Does the stamping in of the VIN number compromise the boiler safety hence why the boiler number is not stamped into the steel but on the welded plate?

Re: DVLA Registration.
It should still be just the fields as specified at the start of this thread.
If the field is. Not listed it is left blank.

Re: DVLA Registration.
Andy, Having looked at this form now I remember it, it is just the first (top ) section and in all sections just put new, i.e. none of the parts have been salvaged from a donor vehicle. Pointless form really for us.
Re: DVLA Registration.
Is the v627/1 form sent once they recieve the v55/4 as I cant find where to download it from.

Re: DVLA Registration.
I have just had a call from the DVLA and they stated I will need a VIN stamped onto the chassis. They will not issue a number plate until this is done.
I argued the point but was told that they had dealt with many STW engines Burrells and Fodens and they are required to have a VIN.
Any engine which was registered without one is technically wrong and could be void as it was registered incorrectly and would need a VIN allocated to the reg plate. She asked me for details of the engines known to be registered incorrectly so the owners could be notified but i gave no details to her.
The rep that phoned said she was aware of this issue and that engines have been registered using the boiler number which is incorrect.
She said she understands not to want the boiler stamped directly and they will happily accept the number stamped onto a plate and welded onto the top of the boiler next to the boiler plate.
I followed the above instructions to the letter and the rep said as soon as the vin has been put on the engine I can email them a photo of proof it was added and they will issue the number plate. Seems this is now the way it is done so expect to have to stamp a VIN onto the engine before they will send out a plate.
I will be contacting Steve for some advice on this matter.

Re: DVLA Registration.
Who should supply the VIN number?
DVLA or the Manufacturer?

Re: DVLA Registration.
They do apparently. They are sending the letter to me today which contains the number. You then have to get it stamped on the engine and get the form stamped by a garage to prove its been done correctly before returning the form by post. The rep.suggested I could email them which I guess would entail scanning the form and emailing back to them which would. Be quicker. Once they have proof the Vin has been put on the engine they will send me the number plate. They are treating all steam engines and you would a kit car. They will not supply a number plate without a vin number on the chassis.

Re: DVLA Registration.
Presumably so long as the VIN number can be seen, it can be stamped on anywhere? Therefore instead of tack welding a plate on top of the firebox wrapper why not stamp the throat plate along the line of the foundation ring - between the washout plugs? 6mm number and letter stamps should be ok they're large enough to see and the stamping shouldn't effect the boiler.

Re: DVLA Registration.
I'm going to stamp it around the front of the foundation ring as the suggestion on fixing the plate on the boiler will technically have to be done by a coded welder and then re hydraulic certified.
Spoken to Steve who said the same.
You will need to get the form rubber stamped by a garage if you stamp the VIN on yourself as it appears others have had to take the engine to their local MOT centre to fulfil the DVLA's demands.
you can get the stamp kits on ebay for a very reasonable price.

Re: DVLA Registration.
I stamped mine on the belly tank bracket as below, and had a small brass plaque made also below. Went to the DVLA Local Enforcement office in Hedge End Southampton and they signed it off ok.
