Rear diff lubrication
Just having a look over the drawings for the rear diff.
Is it a case of having the covers off every so often so re-grease everything?
I'm using engine assembly lube on all oil surfaces. This means it stays there until you use it, much more so than oil but will still wash out with new oil coming in.
I'm using a marine grade bearing grease for everything else:
LUCAS OIL
X-TRA HEAVY DUTY - WHEEL BEARING GREASE
14.5oz - 411g
LUCAS X-TRA HEAVY DUTY GREASE HAS BEEN TESTED AND RETESTED TO INSURE THAT IT IS SUPERIOR TO ALL CONVENTIONAL GREASES. IT MEETS OR EXCEEDS OEM " LUBE FOR LIFE " REQUIREMENTS AND SHOULD LAST FOUR TIMES LONGER THAN CONVENTIONAL GREASES.
*PERFECT FOR MARINE APPLICATIONS*
SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO
•
RESIST SLINGING OUT OF FAST MOVING PARTS
•
RESIST WASHING OUT OF STEERING COMPONENTS ON WET ROADS
•
RESIST MELTING AT HIGH TEMPERATURES 540 F
•
RESIST SQUEEZING OUT UNDER HEAVY LOEADS
•
MAINTAIN A CONSTANT FILM OF PROTECTION EVEN UNDER IRREGULAR MAINTENANCE SCHEDULES
APPLICATION IS PERFECT FOR
HIGH SPEED BEARINGS
HIGH TEMPERATURES
EXTREME PRESSURE
IRREGULAR MAINTENANCE
LONG TERM ECONOMY

Re: Rear diff lubrication
Speaking with someone who has knowledge of the full size foden, its lubricated via splash after putting around half a pint of oil in the covers.
I think I'm going to modify a cover to have a oil fill/drain point then use some gearbox oil in there and change it regularly.
I will seal the covers to the diff, then in theory shouldnt loose too much as there are a good fit around the centre. Obviously only putting oil in to below the lip of the cover.
By putting the drain in the outside edge of the cover, this should allow it to drain fully. (thinking about it it would be better to have one both sides and maybe even a level plug?)

Re: Rear diff lubrication
well I decided to modify the diff cover to allow a fill and drain point. I got some weld in 1/2" NPT fittings for this then will just rotate the diff as required to fill/drain.
Just need to tidy the weld a little. Annoyingly the internal one is really neat, the external I couldnt do in one sweep so doesnt look as nice.
I think a constant source of clean oil can only help it run smoothly over the years:
