Iain's 6" Foden C type
Well, on wednesday morning a big green lorry turned up on my drive with 2 dodgy looking characters
A few minutes later I was left with this lot:
Then by the afternoon I had this:
I had no real issues other than these back 2 gusset plates not quite lining up and requiring releaving. The 2 diagonal measurements were spot on to within a couple of mm, not bad on over 3m
I've now got the front axle to dry assemble before pulling it all down to add some chamfers and clean up all the individual bits before adding some paint
The whole thing is heavy enough now!
I'm going to keep it on the tressle until all the running gear is on so will tackle cleaning the wheels etc up over time. I'm sure it will be handy being able to get underneath and the tressles are rated to 450gks each so plenty left

Re: Iain's 6" Foden C type
just noticed that the forum clips the images so there is some missing from the one of the chassis.
I'll have to look into it when I get home as the access at work is very slow!

Congratulations.
Only one problem I can see. The instruction sheets must be upside down as I think the stretchers and spring hangers need to point downwards?

Re: Iain's 6" Foden C type
latest bit of work still got one king pin thats slightly tight, only place it is tight though is through one half of the thrust washer. Its not too bad so a bit of emery should see it right.
No bearings in the wheels, just hung them on to get an idea
Last bit of fettling to the king pin then its strip down these bits for paint. It was very heavy turning it over though
Started tidying parts up, removing the numbers from the end of the bolts etc.

As I said.
These models are built at least twice before they are even used!

Re: Iain's 6" Foden C type
ONLY TWICE
Where's the fun in that?
There's no doubt about it, it really is an achievement to build one (or two!!) of these beatiful machines & you have to do it to understand why!! I for one have no regrets

Tony

Re: Iain's 6" Foden C type
well, finally got enough paint on all the chassis bits hopefully starting to catch up a little. Hopefully send all the remainder of the bits to the blasters including the wheels next week. Need to touch up a few bits and get rid of some runs but the part needs to properly harden first, also had a go at one hubcap with some wet and dry then a bit of autosol. so shiney you can see my spanners in it needs so work on the flange but getting there:

Re: Iain's 6" Foden C type
Busy night tonight :-) do the dry fit of everything and all looks good. Diff will benefit from some grease but save the mucky job for the final fit. Just waiting on my assembly lube to finally put it all together. Think I'm going to paint this lot after assembly although I need to get the axle boxes painted (and the wheels!) but hopefully get those blasted next week.

Re: Iain's 6" Foden C type
Like everything those gears look great and really well made. I bet the components are heavy when together as kits. Our showmans is bad enough but but this....they will look great on the rally field in a coupe of years time.
Looks good
It looks like you are getting on well with your lorry. I like your idea of fitting an oil filler/drain plug to your dif cover, that will make all the difference when changing and topping up the oil. I have still not decided what to do with my dif yet to make maintenance as easy as possible. All the best for Christmas and I look forward to following your progress in the New Year.

well got a bit further. Few things to touch up and also I cant get the top leaf spring in now they have been painted but I've assembled without to see how things settle then put it back in there later.
Finally see how my colour scheme goes together.

Re: Iain's 6" Foden C type
there are some dinks already
but it will all be ok and touch in i'm sure! Yeah the shine has come nicely. There are a few runs to sort but will give it a few months to really harden off before I attempt them.

Well its been some time but things are moving forward. Plan this weekend is to finish the dry fit and de-burr etc of the steering and brake kits and then get ready for some more painting.
Nice to roll it out and work on the drive for a change today.

Good to see your long wheel based Foden lorry and I like the colour scheme that you have chosen. It makes a change from the traditional red that I have painted my SWB lorry. I will be glad when we start building the body of our lorries and I can start paining with some other than red. Well done, I know how much hard work you have had to put into your lorry so far.

Re: Iain's 6" Foden C type
Thanks
Its coming along now.
Got the steering all tested and the handbrake although want to adjust the position to sort the steering support and put the pulley on but feel i better wait till i have the boiler as there is a section that bolts to the horn plates. I'm about half a hole out at the minute so if i move it, the hornplates may pull it.
I dont seem to get the same position as the drawing for the pulley either so best to wait. Its only a minor mod when the time comes.
