Bowser... is this right?

I have been putting the bowser together today and when I tried the wheels on the axle the pin wouldnt go through the axle as the thrust washer doesnt give enough clearance, seems to cover half the hole. I assume the sequence is right as in thrust washer on axle, oilite bearings in hub, brass retainer in outer face then pin through?? Its not a great issue as I can get the washer turned down just need to check with others that have done the kit before.

Also I have a 9/16 x 26 brass plug for the engine, does this go in one side of the steam head?? Cant find reference to this on the words....

cant remember if it applies to this kit, but some of our axles/ thrust washers have a radius on them. are these mating up properly ???

Paint drying on the axle today but will try it tomorrow and see if were the same.

Yes the brass plug goes on one side of the steam head.

Mine is the same, inner thrust bearing needs to be reduced by about half it's width. Also when the outer is fitted the oil hole is half covered, Easy fix though will get the thrust bearing reduced both sides:D

This is the set up on the axle. The thrust washer seems too large or there should be a hole in the brass reatiner to allow the pin through?







It isnt tapered by the way and the end of the axle is square too.

i may be wrong but i thought the inner hub cover should fit over the washer on the Axel ??

I'll give that a try tomorrow or maybe tonight, doesnt seem to be right knowing how this stuff usally goes together well. Probably user error although the instructions were a bit sparse on final assembly etc so I just put it together. The words say the thrust washer should be glued to the axle with retainer, doesnt mention shoving the oilte bearing further into the hub to gain clearance and from memory I dont think it will go inside the hub cover. I will re read and report.

Just been down to the workshop, the thrust washer definately wont go inside the hub cover. The instructions say to knock the bearings in till they are flush with the outer face which means the outer brass thrust bearing wont then go inside the hub as shown in the photo.

Im my case, with the outer brass thrust bearing fitted as in the picture the outer bearing covers half the oil hole suggesting its to far in the hub?

something is saying to me... brass ring on the inside, steel on the outside. no ???

The overall lenght of the parts (inner thrust bearing, hub, and outer thrust bearing) is greater then the distance from from the square section of the axle to the hole for the pin. Not sure it would matter which way round it was fitted?

Edit..just in case I have checked mine its the same both ways round, however in the way you suggest Craig the oil hole is not covered by the bearing so it seems to be along the right lines, but not strictly as the instructions, I wonder if its just the parts have gone in the wrong bags? Not that this helps with the pin problem though.

OK, it would seem you have the wrong parts. the outer trust washer is an old style part that we no longer use !!!! it would seem that for some stupid reason the new part has the same part number

you should have four (one per wheel) wheel retaining collars, steel rings with hole, and a pin to go through the ring and axle. this is then held in place by the hub cap

if you don't have these we will get them out to you

Thanks Craig they arrived today, and spent a few hours tonight fitting the tyers.

To fit the pin I still had to turn down the inner washer by about 2mm, however I reduced the width of the original brass outer one (easier with the equipment I have) and used this on the inner and all fits fine. :

its worth trying the locking collars "both ways". they don't always come out on the centre. sometimes we move them a bit to get a good fit !!!
