How is spraying the engine cheating?!!!!
This thread started out as a bit of fun and there has been some friendly banter throughout.
However, I dont think that its a very fair or accurate statement to call people cheaters for spraying their engine.
im sure as we are all amateurs we will all do our best and we may not produce pro master pieces but you can hardly accuse anyone of cheating...at the end of the day its down to the builder to use whatever means available to them to finish their engine they way they choose.

I think perhaps my words could have been chosen better and i certainly hadn't banked on that kind of reaction.
I'm not bothered how you paint your engine and had fully intended to spray mine however i found it to messy in the small area i have to paint and i have a dust issue so chose to brush instead.

No one is cheating by spraying and if i've offended anyone is saying that then i apologise.
What I meant was spraying is possibly a quicker and easier way of getting paint onto your engine once you have got it set up right leaving a good glossy skin.
Brushing isn't as predictable and in my opinion takes longer. Not harder just longer. That is were the cheating line came in. wasn't a dig at sprayers at all.

Anyway I wish everyone on here the best of luck with there builds.

With regards to the Showmans RL argument. Each to his own..
In my opinion they are the same engine just wearing different clothes for very different reasons.

If I could have the best of both I would have chosen that but the showmans looks wrong with the lid off.
I intend to make my roof on my RL easily removable so I can take it off for long road runs.

I have to say this thread was started for a laugh so I would hate it to turn bad, so sorry if this is happening. I understand both points of view in a way. Brian M and I have spoken about spraying and painting the engine because to be honest the painting is the bit I am not looking forward to because if you get it wrong, it will look shocking. As we have all spent a lot of money building these engines, it's up to the owner how they do it. Brian and I went out and purchased a compressor, gun and other bits to allow us to spray the parts. Looking at the wheels and photos on this forum we went for a 3rd option and are having them done by a spray shop. I don't believe we or anyone else is cheating or it was meant that way, I did not take it that way. As people have said this forum is one of the best forums I have seen and had an input too (most I just read) it would be sad if that changed. Sad Sad .

The other reason Brain M is having his engine done at a paint shop is his painting skills are at the same level as my 3 year old (you have got to see the painting he does in his house Embarassed Crying or Very sad). To be fair I am not that good, that's why my wife does all the painting in our house Razz.

I would ask Bj to paint my engine as his photos look good but he would paint it as a RL scheme and I can't have that being a showman

No No Razz

Hi sonic45
just rubbed me up the wrong way when you said:

'I'm proud to say I haven't cheated and used spray.'

mainly because i intend to spray my engine (whenever i can get home to assemble it!) and i didnt to want to feel like i had somehow cheated because i had used my compressor and spray gun to finish the engine!
i think we'll all put a similiar amount of effort in to get our engines looking fantastic!!

No you haven't cheated.

sorry if i "rubbed" you up the wrong way ?

Enjoy the build other than the tiny nuts for the tender and belly tank which stripped my fingers of skin.

Im certainly not building a competition model but whatever others may think I'll be so proud of it when it's finished.

lets put this one to bed..

I had no intention of been abrasive or upsetting anyone on here.
after all we are all like minded and have the same hobby.

I take back what i said as it was clearly miss understood and i wasn't clear of what I meant.

I wish this thread to continue its jovial lines from its original question.

Showmans or Road loco..

Road loco.

Showman

No offence found. :-) I known spray is harder than brush. Takes much more planning. Some parts will be brushed as it would not be efficient to spray or too intricate.

Showman Showman Showman! or should that be showwoman?

Okay I have another question:

Is it easier to spray an engine or paint one???

Oh no, this has been raised.... Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Anyway it does not matter which I do because the showman will always look better than the RL Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

I have a good question: who will do a better job of building an engine me or Brian M (ME ME ME just in-case you need any help in the direction of your answer Smile Smile).

Sometimes the truth hurts, it's like when that girl you like does not like you back and runs off with your best friend after you have brought her drinks all night with a small hope of a smile pale. Sometimes you have to accept what you are told, I am sorry if you can't take it, if you can't you should have NOT PURCHASED A SHOWMAN you should have got a.................RL geek

The thread is fun, I certainly do not take it serious, I like your comment about different clothes, I must have summed it up quite well with my earlier comment then - so just to clarify:-

Rod Loco = Arnold Scharzenigger dressed as Terminator (with roof) or Conan the Barbarian (without roof).
Showmans = Danny LaRue

By the way, just took all four wheels to be spraid by professional, I just could not face it. In the coming weeks I am never at home enough to brush paint all the coats in consecutive days and I have got the tender and accessories to get on with when I do find time in the workshop!!

cheers cheers cheers

Fortunately this fair land is big enough for Road Locos and Showmans and as they have sold in roughly equal numbers is there a point to this!!!

Let the Showmans light the way for the Road Loco's to do the work!

On the fence like Craig ? Laughing

I know your building one of each so what can you say? How are they progressing, how do you find the time if indeed you have?

Look forward to seeing your crane version anyhow.
