Fuseable plugs update
Just had a conversation with Peter Squires from the Southern Federation of Model Engineers regarding this matter. The reason some feel a fuseable plug is a liability is down to some engines having one that is not to scale. If the fuseable plug is too large, when it goes the fire can be blown all over the operator which has happened several times and this has caused injury. Also there is the matter of dissimilar metals not liking each other.
Regarding the STW fuseable plugs I have seem many 'blow' (not mine mind you!) without injury so I would say they are the right scale size and do what they are intended to do with the minimum of fuss. Although some personal embarrassment usually follows!!. Regarding the dissimilar metals problem I think so long as they are regularly removed I haven't seen this as an issue.
Regarding Royal Sun Alliance and insurance there is no requirement to have a fuseable plug so it is left to the builder/operator whether one is fitted or not.
Personally I think if it's there and it's the right size, use it.

Copper Slip Grease
Small word of caution with Copper Slip grease. I was using it on the threads of the washout plugs. Sadly I was applying too much which
created no end of Priming problems due to the excess finding its way into the boiler water. So my advise would be use it sparingly.

Never had that issue, but then I only apply a thin smear over the threads. Its not like when I'm plastering it round the brake pad backing plates on the vehicles.
