Bunker Beading
Hi All,
following behind most of you - what have people done with the gap at the back of the bunker between the beading and plates at the corner?
I was thinking of filling with car body filler?
Cheers

Re: Bunker Beading
I filled mine with Ronsell wood filler. Basically any catty filler will work.

Re: Bunker Beading
Have been building my tender this weekend and was wondering myself this afternoon as I was putting the beading around the rear corners. I was thinking about using the same stuff as I used to produce the bead on the wheel rims.

Re: Bunker Beading
Thanks both, Ian, do you think you will need to put any filler on the curves at the rear of the sides to get a good finish?

I filled the gap between the back plate and the side but kept the filler square and inside. Produces a slight "thickening" of the joint but does not round it.

Re: Bunker Beading
I have got quite a good joint between the back and sides although there is a small step in the back where the plates are welded together. Interestingly the left side is fine. I wish I had spotted it before putting all those bolts in as it would have been easy to run the flap wheel up the edge to smooth it out, so may use a bit of plastic padding chemical metal to fill this blip, but the actual curve is pretty good and will probably smooth out with high build primer only with no need to use the filler. Although there is a small hole in one of the welds so I will push some filer into that.
Have you attempted to shape the U shaped beading yet? I have and am pleased with the result using flap wheel in the angle grinder my favourite toy.
I really struggled to get the tank front plate in but eventually having shaped the bottom corners a bit more it finally gave in, was tempted to use a bigger persuader.
I have left the tank top off until I get the sealer from Frost my thinking is that I may put the sealer on first to ensure I can see it gets everywhere before putting the top on.
Will post some pictures when I dust off the camera.

Re: Bunker Beading
You wil have no trouble getting the frost sealer everywhere, just block off all the holes and turn it every which way you can for a while, its great exercise!
its quite runny at first and finds all the gaps with ease and soon blocks them all up.
dont do it in the front room on your best carpet!

Re: Bunker Beading
Hi
I left the front plate off as my think was you can get to every where including around the brake shaft. Then when the front panel is in place you can have it on end and paint downwards onto a flat surface without interferance.
I then used sash clamps to ease the panel in to place for bolting up. then painted it.
BTW I Isoflexed mine

Re: Bunker Beading
Lynn,
I was thinking about getting enough of the sealer on to the brake tube as well hence why I was leaving the top plate off. I also tried Kevs idea of picking it up and twisting it, but it is really heavy and not sure if my back would be up to the job.

Hi Ian et al,
Am I getting flap wheel and flap disk confused here? How do you fit a flap wheel in an angle grinder?
This stems from the instructions in my first kit saying 'flap wheel', so I went out and bought one that fits in a pistol drill. However for chamfering things like spokes I thought a 'flap disk' in an angle grinder would be more appropriate - can anyone advise?
Thanks
Dan

Re: Bunker Beading
You beat me to a reply Lynn!
I have also just bought a Black and Decker power file which is brilliant for taking the sharp edges off, it doesn't knacker the drill flap wheel, is quicker than the flap wheel. It is much more controllable than the angle grinder flap disc. I have been using it to shape the beading at the front of the bunker and it is a delight to use.

Go for it - there is a lot of sanding to be done - really useful addition to the toy (tool) box

Flat panel sanding to clean and key up for painting. Works very well with a grinder and AL2O3 pads

Re: Bunker Beading
Just checked and one of those flap wheels comes to £27 including delivery! A quick search finds nowhere else in the UK selling them. I'll have to pour over my catalogues when I get home. Apologies for hi-jacking this thread MrStationHouse!

Re: Bunker Beading
No worries at all, becoming a bit of an "abrasive" thread!
However, you don't need to pay £27 for an angle grinder flap wheel. Screwfix have one for under £5

When is a wheel not a disc?

Hi Simon - screwfix only do the discs though - that's not a 'flap wheel' per se. I presume you mean this:
This is a disc not a wheel

Sorry getting my abrasives wrong, if you do a search on amazon for flap wheels, both types come up for reasonable money.

Close but not quite!
MrStationHouse wrote:Sorry getting my abrasives wrong, if you do a search on amazon for flap wheels, both types come up for reasonable money.
Ahhhhh - but how many of those will fit an angle grinder? All the ones I see on amazon are suitable for a pistol drill, not a grinder I've got plenty of those already! Lynn put up a link to exactly want I want and they _are_ expensive!

Re: Bunker Beading
Try your local industrial supplier. We have HIS (Highland Industrial Suppliers) and the prices there are a fraction of consumer shops. Also when you want 1 off bolt x by y. you can buy one bolt!
