"Little Beastie" at the Preston Rally
Note: I don't believe in polishing my engine whilst at a rally - engine presented in "working clothes"
"Little Beastie" is now nice and clean with a little polish ready to get dirty again at the Dialpost
Rally 5-6th July.

Burrells at Boconnoc 2008
Heres a couple of 4'' Burrells enjoying the sunshine at Boconnoc this year. The first one (blue) is Buzz's ''Missy'' and the second one is my ''Trelawney''. Both engines performed well over the three days with only a tin of brasso required in the way of maintenance!

Re: Photo's of 4" Burrell's
I thought you all might want to see an update as to how my burrell looks now. Its been a lot of hard work but i think its all paying of.
Has anyone got any tips on painting the front name rings and keeping the paint of the letters (apart from being cafefull with a paint brush)
cheers

Mark, I cheated!
I sprayed everything an removed the paint from the letters. The top of my letter were flat and all it took was a rub with fine wet n dry.

Re: Photo's of 4" Burrell's
Thanks Julia.
I think thats what the previous owner tryed exept it looks like he used something like a screwdriver to scrape the paint of the letters which has resulted in lots of deep scratches which i have been try to wet n dry out but it does'nt seem to be working so i will give it one more go and if it does'nt work i will order a new one.
cheers

Re: Photo's of 4" Burrell's
I got all the deep scratches out and resprayed it the same way as Julia and it works very well a lot better than trying to brush paint between the letters.
Thanks again Julia

Completed Burrell updated pictures
Hi All,
I thought I would share the photos of my newly completed 4" which was delivered to me on Wedsnesday the 8th. It has been succesfully steamed by me alone and drives very well, all the relevant paperwork was also present and the postie even delivered the NTET disc from Walker Midgely as the engine was unloaded.
A word of warning though, I would think very carefully about this route before embarking on it due to a number of reasons not least of which is the loss of the building experience and the fact that I can no longer hold my head high and say yes when people ask if I built it. Also I dont feel I can say that its is an STW or Modelworks version as it is neither. It is however very pleasing to be finished.
The first is the engine on the road the second is my little man enjoying the ride and finally me including the MW trailer I bought and completed two years ago in anticipation.

Hi Mark
Nickel plated motion gear + other bits which turned out better than expected and have been painting cleading, gear guards and gears now on second top coat and starting to get a good shine. spent most of the day today polishing and chamfering parts.

Re: Photo's of 4" Burrell's
Any pictures? plus any pictures of the nickel plated items?? I should of done this on my engine as these parts are rusting quickly with the Shetland air!!
Did you use that nickel plating kit that Steve and Dean recomend in the instructions?

Re: Photo's of 4" Burrell's
I Nickel plated the parts using caswell (caswelleurope.co.uk) electroless plating kit which was a Christmas presentat. All the parts were cleaned with sulphuric battery acid + 10% distilled water. The only drawback to this is the quantity it will do as i had to buy more chemicals (£80) to do everything i need, i may try the electro plating on the showmans as it does about 50 times more surface area but you have to be carefull about shadowing and is a bit more complicated. No pics as yet engine in pieces just trying to decied how to do the lining probaly 2 lines but not sure what width.
Keith
Keith
Lining & Nickel plating
The width of full size lining should, in theory, be 1" black, 3/8" red, 1" maroon (or the engine body colour) and 1/8" yellow for Burrell TE's at full size. The SRLs had the added complication of gold leaf. In certain situations you would need to squeeze these dimensions a little. I think the important thing is to have the yellow line significantly narrower than the red to get the correct colur balance. Many exposed edges on engines were painted black. This was for the simple reason that it is is easier to touch in black paint when it has worn or been chipped than it is a body colour.
I used the recommneded electroplating system and had good results. I used it on the bits of the engine that were either the wrong colour or prone to rust: e.g. the outer name ring, hub caps, reversing pole catch handle & fairleads for the winch. I did not plate the motion as I prefer the natural steel colour.
