Plating steel to prevent corrosion
Thinking of purchasing two metal coating kits from Frost Restoration. Chemi-black (Satin) for those small little steel items that you want to keep rust free. Also a Nickel plating kit, i am concerned that the nickel will be to shiny.
Does anyone have any ideas/thoughts?
Thanks
Craig

Hi Craig
Nickel plating comes out quite dull.
The quality of the finish depends on several factors from speed of application to length of time in the salts.
Plating does not improve the surface finish so the pre-prep you do will show in the end results.
Enough of my ramblings. take a look at what the experts say here.

nickel will look ok, chrome would look too shiny and terrible on a steam engine.

Hi
On Cyrstal a lot of my motion is nickel plated. It has a dull sheen to it. Looks like aged scotch bright polished steel in colour. Silvery with a tinge of yellow to my eye.
It is a frost kit. The blacking kit will also show every finger print in excellent detail so be careful and super clean.

I've got some of my parts Nickled, reverser, drain cock rod, steering column and a few other bits and bobs, but none of the motion is done as I like the clean or often not clean steel look.
To be honest I've not had any "rusting" issues, everything has a good coating of steam oil for it to rust
