Hi

By using a extension to the chimney do you think we could produce more electricity from the Showman engines?

Using a chimney extension helps to draw the fire especially in the early stages that is why on the 4" SC Burrell one is supplied. It also gives a natural draw as opposed to sticking an electric fan on top of the chimney which is prone to forcing air up through the fire.

The Showmans engines carried a chimney extension on the roof not to help draw the fire but to raise the smoke from the engine high enough so that it doesn't smoke everyone out at the showground. The secondary effect is to help the fire draw but it didn't really need it just for that. The amount of electricity generated is down to how hard the engine works and how well set up it is. Regarding engine efficiency the chimney extension wouldn't really help as that is more to do with extracting as much power from a given amount of steam as possible. So in answer to your question..............No!

I think a showmans will draw enough of a crowd without having a tornado coming out of its chimney!!
