4 inch Burrell driving truck kit one
starting to get material in for kit one of the 4inch wagon now.
the wheel rims are here (in a bit of a mess as we had to unload them by hand, bloody fork truck )...
and billets have arrived for the hub parts
we would really hope to get this first kit out this month. i'll let you know how things progress

4" WAGON
Do the wagon wheels have rubber tyres? If so, are they to be glued on as on the engine or is there any possibility of having them vulcanised before delivery??

Re: 4 inch Burrell driving truck kit one
the first load if wheels are now wielded ready for drilling...
and the rubber is in for the tyres...
really not sure about vulcanised wheels David. we do have to send off the rear wheels for the Showman's soon so it may be possible BUT it will cause a delay to your kit.
i'll have to pester dean/steve for a decision

4" TRUCK WHEELS
A delay would not be a problem to me and it would be very nice to have them vulcanised.

Re: 4 inch Burrell driving truck kit one
finally got the wheels on the mill today for drilling...
hubs, hub covers and centre caps are coming on well (photos tomorrow after drilling)
just waiting for all the laser cut spokes to arrive.
dean has been trying to get some competitive quotes for the wheel vulcanising but has just come up with "silly prices". Steve insists that the glued on rubber tyres are fine for the driving truck but if you really want to go with vulcanised i would suggest you contact the office direct

To vulcanise or not to vulcanise?
I've had my traction wagon loaded up with coal, water & arm waving sprogs to the point when it could carry no more and the tyres are showing no signs of coming off. They were just glued on with Isoflex. Of the several wagons I know of out there I've not heard of a problem with tyres (unlike the back wheels of the engine!). I think the weight loadings are well within Isoflex's stickability ratings.

Hi Steve
Sounds like you could do with another wagon? You can pull more than one, just think of all the pleasure you would bring to those arm waving sprogs. Oh and Dean when he takes your deposit.

To Vulcanise or not?
The rear wheels on the engine are driving power to the road via the tyres so good adhesion to the wheels is a big must as they carry not just the compressive load of the engine weight but also the drive force which is a shearing force. The tyres on the front wheels of the engine and those on the trailer are just carrying the the weight so are only under a compressive load (At least when going in a reasonably straight line).
I must say the vulcanised tyres look very nicely finished on the drive wheels, but at a cost. It was something like £150 as I remember.
So weighing things up, I am happy to get myself plastered in Isoflex to save a few quid on the trailer!
regards
Paul

More on tyres
I have noticed that when the isoflexed rear tyres came off my engine (and another one) that both times we were on very narrow lanes with a lot of road camber. This makes me think that the whole weight of the back end was resting on the inner two tyres which are the ones that peeled off first. Also on each occasion it was a very hot day with high road temperatures and the tyres (after they had come off) were like rubber bands with the heat in them! I had done quite a few miles on ordinary (2 lane) roads with no problem and also the rally field (grass) presents little strain for the tyres. The situation is acedemic now anyway as all back wheels come vulcanised as standard on 4" engines.
Moral of the story is if you still have a Burrell with Isoflexed rear tyres, avoid very narrow lanes on hot days!

Tyres
Is it my imagination or is the tyre material thicker than on the original traction wagons? Perhaps we had low profile tyres for better cornering!

Re: 4 inch Burrell driving truck kit one
well all the work is done and the parts are in the boxes but... the rivet bolts that have been specially made to order have been delayed.
we should get them in another week and then the kit will go.
the good news is... work has already started on kit two.

Limited or Not?
Having looked at the 4" wagon product page. I am a bit worried that it is limited?
Will they still be available in 3 years time when I would be wanting to buy at least 1 most probabily 2 with a water bowser.

Re: 4 inch Burrell driving truck kit one
Lynn,
The wagon we are currently manufacturing is really an agricultural wagon and not ideally suited to the Road Loco / Showman's engine. We do intend to release a batch of wagons that were specifically for these somewhere near the end of the build, so no need to panic.
All the best
Dean.
