You can buy nice chimes from Live steam models but if your after a more authentic named chime with provenance you will need to look to America. Expect to by upwards from £300 for a Lonergan or Lunkenheimer and if your wallet is bursting a Crosby chime will fetch £400-500.

Prices in the UK are more inflated as most if not all are imported and sold on.

10 years ago the market was quiet for whistles but now it gone mad.

I bought a 3" diameter Lonergan 3 chime from the United States after searching steam forums over there.

Most decent sellers will run it on air before you buy it so you can see its a goer.

Kieth, was that question directed to me or Lynn? The old loco type chimes have a valve built into the whistle. You will just need a reducing Bush as the whistles are oversize. Not sure on the live steam models type.

Hi Kieth.

The live steam whistle fits the Steam Traction World valve but you need to open the steam passages a bit in the valve to get a good enough delivery. Which I did with a file and a Dremel type tooling.

Sorry to dig out this old thread.

Lately my whistle, better the whistle valve, gives me much trouble, normally it takes quite some time to get it to seal against the steam by lightly tapping the housing but last time this did not work anymore, there was a constant massive leak through the valve, so in the end I had to stop the whole firing and let Pied Piper cool down.

Upon inspection afterwards I found the PTFE seal in the valve body to be in a bad state and neither a new seal nor any idea how to remove it in the first place. So now I plugged the valve inlet entirely as a workaround, but that is not what I would like to do in the long run.

So upon searching the forum and with suggestion from Lynn I am now looking at the 4 chime whistle as Crystal has/had. As far as I understand it can be used with the stock (STW) valve but will give a better/nicer tone Very Happy

But basically I am happy with the whistle as it is, it‘s just the whistle valve that gives me trouble.  Sad

Looking at the drawing in the instruction it appears as if the thread on the inlet of STW valve is much bigger than the outlet. If that then fits the Livesteam 4 chime whistle and the suggested Livesteam valve as same thread inlet and outlet, it will not be a 1:1 replacement. Or where did I go astray? Question

Any suggestion?

Cheers

The STW valve body BU42343 has 3/8 by 32 inlet and outlet female threads.
The LSM valve is the same thread but is male in female out.
It is possible to use the LSM Valve by changing your existing whistle plate to a female thread or make an adapter to connect the 2 male ends together.
As you like what you have then give STW a ping, they might have a replacement on the shelf
as it is the same part number as the Aggie, Roller and SCC.
Hope this helps you get back on the trail Very Happy Very Happy

Hello Simon,

thanks for the info, should have checked with Pied Piper and not just trusting memory and drawing. I thought to remember it to be large male in and small female out. But my memory seems to fade at such details.

As for the STW valve resp. parts (seal) for it,I already contacted them but due to pandemic my mail might have gone astray, will do again.
The real issue I have is that I was constantly fiddling with the whistle all during last year; I was trying to get a consistently working valve. I repeatedly removed and replaced new/different springs and balls but it only helped for a short time if any.

So right now I am thinking about changing the valve and whistle in toto, having heard Crystal‘s whistle in the video. The STW whistle is good, but the LSM seems to sound even better.

But it‘s not settled yet, all depends on what Government says, she decides on the budget and my pocket money Very Happy

Thanks

Cheers

Hi Nigel

Yes the Whistle valve body is on the shop and looks like in stock as well. It is BU42343. Yes easiest if you know the part number is to use the search box.

Oi Elwood. Stop pinching my job! ;-)
