Kit 18 stearing

Hi All

So who has their stearing on already?

What, ain't you done yours yet?











Worked on mine this afternoon, due to being "rained off" real work!!
I even chemically blacked all the bits!!

Nope not done mine. Will not get the kit for another 2 weeks or so.
Remember I am still a kit behind everyone else Also will not be fitting until I have the cylinder block as the belly tank is not attached at the moment while I adjust the cleading. I also do not want to put the tank on and off too much as it already has scratches on it So bit of a stand still until the cylinder.

I've decided to do the same as you Lynn for the same reasons. The blocks are back with STW who are waiting for the gaskets to arrive and then they will be sent out. The steering wheels should be back at STW HQ on Friday i'm told.

Chomping at the bit now to get on with it after a lean few months as I expect everyone else is.

I have the same idea of blackening the chain.
I've looked at various online companies that provide you with a kit.

Did you do yours or send it away?
If DIY which kit did you decide on and how much black solution did you require.

I think it's a good idea as it will save it from rust and looks better in my opinion.

I blacked the chains & associated bits using a kit from Frost, works really well. It's a simple system, all done cold with three solutions, cleaner, blacking solution & a finishing oil. The kit has done my Agricultural engine & should do the Showmans too, plus other "stuff" I've dropped in the solution!!
Finish is good & stops things rusting, well worth doing in my opinion!!

I have a kit from GLR Distributors, the model engineering suppliers. I did a lot of things on my 7 1/4" gauge Standard 5 chassis like brake rods, brake arms pins etc.. The blacking solution has all but had it now so I would need to buy another kit unless you can buy the chemicals individually. I have not seen them advertised seperately.

It does not totally stop the rust either, the brake rodding has a tough of rust coming through. It has been on for the last 2 years in my garage.

Tony, the Frost kit must come with a larger volume of chemicals if you can submerge your chains in it.

The kit from Frost can be bought in separate items, so if you only want the "blacking solution", you can buy it on its own. if you buy the complete kit, you get three plastic containers (look like ice cream containers to me!!) inwhich to put the solutions, & yes all the chains & adjusters etc fitted in, in one go!!

Thanks for that, probably the same chemicals too although the GLR one came with 4, the last one was for "sealing" the coating.

yes, blocks are back with us, just waiting for gaskets.

steering wheels arrived today and are on the machine now.

crank shafts are due in "very early July" and the folder for the cylinder accessories kit has been issued this week...

... so calm down, calm down
