Showmans / Road loco rolling chassis
with the Dorset show out the way its now safe to post the photos of the rolling chassis on the forum
we are using a dummy hollow boiler and a rather basic rear Axel but everything is set to the correct dimensions.

Dorset Show
Here is a picture of the STW stand when at about 6.30pm a gap appeared (for a millisecond!) in the crowd for me to take this picture. The stand was busy all day every day. The Showmans/Road Loco mock up was very impressive & received nothing but praise from everyone. Having looked at it for 5 days and from every angle I don't think there is any way of improving it, everything is spot on. Anyone interested in one should decide soon as with the ones we sold at Dorset there's only a few left of this extended run and when 'they're gone they're gone' as they say. Also the 'J' type Foden in SWB Artic form is going to be a 'hot' engine on the rally field as there is nothing like it out there & will be a real head turner.
ps Can anyone spot the deliberate mistake on the stand?!!

Re: Showmans / Road loco rolling chassis
The stand looked fine to me although I'd had quite a bit to drink by the time i made it over to the stand..
Is the left hand tent the wrong way around?
I was impressed to see how busy the stand was from first thing all the way through the afternoon.
i even caught the tail end of a conversation over by the showmans line later on in the evening talking about the DCC and how impressive it will look when finished so i'm happy i've made the right decision to build an STW model.
Here is another view of the stand.

Just one word of advice if you are thinking of going to Dorset next year.. Cover your car?
The dust is unbelievable and due to all the heavy haulage movement in the play pen it is kicked up is great clouds.
I had to literally scrape my way down to glass on the windscreen and there wasn't one part of the car that didn't have a chalky white film on it.. Other than that seeing the rolling chassis in the flesh and surmising over the possibility of a double seat arrangement on the back well and truly made up for it.
Many Thanks for the IPA..
Nick

no dean on the stand ?
dean on the stand ?
taking a photo with your shadow in it ?
leaflet stand in front of rolling chassis ?
too far away from beer tent ?
too close to beer tent ?
101 reasons why the models are not "exactly" like the originals in ways that only true enthusiasts (read geeks) would know
lack of any LARGE Steam Traction World signs ?

Signs
Who didn't pack the signs then!!! no xmas bonus for them then. Next year there might be flags up so the stand is easy to find.

Re: Showmans / Road loco rolling chassis
the prototype laser cuts for the dynamo mounting arrived this week and have been rolled and fitted to the chassis...
all that work on the smoke-box and now you can hardly see it

Hi Craig
Looking good on the extension for the dynamo. I take it that the smokebox door does not get impeded by the extension?

Re: Showmans / Road loco rolling chassis
the door comes into contact with the mounting just before it reaches 90 degrees of "open-ness". still plenty of room to get in there but you cant open the door "fully and out of the way" any more.
I'll take a photo before the end of the day

Re: Showmans / Road loco rolling chassis
Hi Craig,
You may be able to open the door, but I don't think it'll will be possible to remove the door hinge pin unless it's modified or put in from the bottom & held in place somehow. ( with split pin at the top, perhaps?)
Just a thought for those who will want to remove the door without taking the whole engine to pieces after it's built!!

Re: Showmans / Road loco rolling chassis
would an extra hole in the dynamo mounting plate be useful for removing the door hinge pin?
sorry still have not decided to build one of these yet. still have a few things to do to my 2" first.
Would really like a 6" next! will have to start saving up!

Pins
Hummm. Think I may just put the hinge pin up side down and secure with a R clip.

Re: Showmans / Road loco rolling chassis
well there's a lot to go on top of the mounting so im not sure there would be clearance to pass the pin up into a hole, but good idea, worth looking at
another alternative would be to have the top hinge block threaded and end of the pin threaded so you can "screw" the pin in place, but then we are moving away from type

Hi
Looks to me as though you can get a tube brush in OK so why would you need to remove the door apart from repainting the name rings when the paint tarnishes.

Hinge pin
On my engine the hinge is polished metal so will need to be removable to keep that proper showmans "wow factor". I have actually made a small collar & drilled through hinge pin & collar & fitted a taper pin. There is a fabulous showmans engine "Dolphin" near here which I'm sort of copying. The same man also owns the "president" which I took the pictures of, which you see from STW.

Smokebox door
I noticed up at Dorset this year at least one Burrell Showmans had the smokebox door hinged from the bottom so it drops down. Whether this was done by Burrells or later on I couldn't say but it would alliviate the hinge pin problem. The hole in the dynamo bracket might not work anyway depending on where the dynamo sits. Other options are two small hinge pins, stick it in upside down with an R clip, unbolt the door from the hinge, unbolt the hinge from the smokebox or crack open another tinny and leave it as it is!

Smokebox door pin
Hi
Just been looking through the pictures of ex-mayor Here and I think the smokebox door pin is in the upside down position!

Show
Hi Craig
What show is it this weekend?
Pinstriping paint and brushes arrived yesterday. Practice and trial run hopefully tonight. Axil first as it is the easiest I think.
