Vulcanised tyres and Powder Coating??
AS the title suggests I am likely to have my engine powder coated as I did with the 4" agricultural for several reasons not least of which is the lack of hassle it involves. However with the rear tyres already being vulcanised in place the question has arisen as to wether the powder coating heat cure process will upset or damage the tyres in any way.
Does anyone know what the outcome of this one mgiht be. The powder coaters think that they can cure their mix without enough heat to cause a problem but they did mention that the rubber can become brittle if over cured. Is it possible to find out what temperature the rubber is cured at? I am told the powder cure temperature is around 180 deg C. Any opinions or info gratefully received.
Thanks Kev.

Re: Vulcanised tyres and Powder Coating??
Any one got any info on this thread? Or can STW point me to the vulcanizers so I can ask them about heat etc.
Cheers Kev.

Re: Vulcanised tyres and Powder Coating??
A typical cure would be 50 PSI steam pressure in an autoclave for one hour.
That is 148 C for an hour

Hi Kev
We asked the vulcanisers and they said they've never tried it. They were certain that the heat would adversely the rubber but weren't sure if the vulacanising would affect the powder coat. We've sent them a sample to play with. Will let you know.

Re: Vulcanised tyres and Powder Coating??
Hi All,
Here's some feedback on Vulcanising and Powder Coating:
I have had my kids 2" Burrell Front and Rear Wheels back from the Vulcanising people and the results are a disaster! (It was an experiment though so not really complaining)
I can confirm that the Powder Coating is ruined and wheels can NOT be powder coated first. Worse than that, the wheels can NOT be Vulcanised first and then powder coated either as this then ruins the vulcanising.
In summmary:
If you are having wheels vulcanised..........Powder Coating is not an option.
All the best
