fusable plug melting temp ? Empty fusable plug melting temp ?

anyone know the melting temp of the fusable plug on a 4" burrell ?
looks like 1/2 bspt thread but not sure, could possibly be 3/8
I was informed that "homemade" are filled with solder but originals are lead.
Due to in-experiance managed to blow mine the other-day, sure it had sufficent water ?
thought to buy 2, as you never seam to need a spare when you have one Embarassed

Ooops, it should be 3/8 BSP, always worth having a spare, that goes with the gauge glass.

Normally they are lead filled, its been recommended to me if I re-lead them to drill out the old lead, run a tap through it and then tin the hole with solder before filling with lead.
By running a tap through it first this gives something for the solder/lead to grab onto, this stops the core just sliding out which could be what happened to yours if you feel you had water.

I was at rally this weekend and ran a couple of times far closer to the wire than I would like but a clinkered grate and spending too much time in the beer tent gave me a hard time pulling it back before it went all hissy on me Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Morning Peter.

This one is going to contain a lot of figures SORRY for that !
Modern "Lead Free" solder used in plumbing melts at around 215 C.
60/40 (electrical solder melts at around 200 C.
Lead melts at around 320 C.

If you have an SCC or DCC you will be running up to 180psi at that pressure the steam will be at around 195 C
If you have a single (Aggie) you will be running up to 120psi at that pressure the steam will be at around 175 C
If you have a 2" you will be running up to 100psi at that pressure the steam will be at around 170 C

The 2 solder variants wont give you as much time if your getting low on water as lead will.
hope that helps.
