Mikes Video Diary of his STW Burrell SCC Build.
Hi Folks,
Before deciding to take the plunge in building a traction engine kit I watched the video series produced by Chris of his SCC build.
It encouraged me to have a go although I was almost put off by how much specialist equipment he had at his disposal.
So, I have decided to keep my own video diary of my build to show how I get on with hand held power tools.
The first video has gone up tonight
I have added a playlist link so this post will continue to show the latest video in the series.
Thanks to all you seasoned builders on the forum who regularly post updates and photos on your engines and answer questions from those of us just starting out.
Cheers
Mike

Re: Mikes Video Diary of his STW Burrell SCC Build.
Welcome aboard. Yes indeed some builder have a good play pen to fettle things in. But as Steve and Dean always say. These are fully machined kits. Yes some issues may appear but a quick call usually cures the problem. Even when I was building I needed to clean a couple threads and Steve immediately offered the parts returned to be done. But I ended borrowing a tap from STW and did it myself.
I can definitively say say Crystal my 4" Showman was built with hand tools only. The biggest hand power tool being the grinder with flap disks. No lathe or mill required at all.

Re: Mikes Video Diary of his STW Burrell SCC Build.
Same here, basically hand tools only.
Don‘t own a lathe or mill, might have been useful sometimes but I did without. The only power tool besides a drill I used is a angle grinder, both normal 115 mm size and a miniature one about 40 mm dia. for tight areas.
A good set of taps and dies is a very good investment as I needed to clean up many holes due to paint seeping into the threads.
Plus a set of hand tools - the normal mechanic‘s toolbox should go a long way. I purchased some tools more out of convenience instead of trying to find and borrow it somewhere.
If you need deep info, there is a list of suggested tools (Lynn I think did it).
Cheers

Hi Samuel,
Thanks for replying, when you open the first box with all the wheel parts it can seem a bit daunting, but, the satisfaction of seeing a finished wheel will keep you going
There is lots of help and advice on here
Keep us posted on your progress
Best Wishes
Mike

Building to resume soon
milford59 wrote:Any more videos to show us Mike ?
Hi,
I have had to take a pause in construction but on Tuesday this week kits 4 through 10 arrived.
I have also moved my assembly area into my work premises so that I have more space without getting into trouble at home.
After trying citric acid before to remove the lime scale I have just bought 3 large containers so that I can clean the tender parts and horn plates.
I am tempted to skip the rear wheels and go straight to the tender but I haven't decided yet.
I have invested in a new camera which should have a better microphone and less wind noise too
Thanks for your interest in the videos, more will be uploaded in the next few weeks
regards
Mike

That’s good news Mike - I look forward to seeing some more video soon..... If I was in your situation, I think I would leave the rear wheels for the time being, in order to catch up on some other kits.... I don’t think there are any dependencies on the wheels for a long time yet...

Re: Mikes Video Diary of his STW Burrell SCC Build.
Hi guys
until you reach the boiler it won't matter what order you do the kits in (although obviously you need to do kit 7 before kit . So skipping the rear wheels to do the tender shouldn't be an issue, and even then once you get to the boiler you will need to remove the wheels to put the gears on and so on, so really I would only put the wheels on properly at around kit 20 or 23, however do not then skip other parts that look like they can be added later (such as the ashpan, as if you come to add that right at the end you will find that you can't fit the rear swinging bar due to the gear guards being in the way).
Many thanks
