Re: Getting Itchy fingers
I know I've already asked this on the e-mail Lynn but I'm sure others will be equally interested.
So the blacks been flattened back and now you are lining, but doesnt this mean you'll have to mask the lining when you make the black shinny again ?
EDIT :- ah yes of course the clear coat will bring the black back to shiny

Yes. Spot on.
The black flatted to allow better keying for the red pinstripe. The once the red is dry a light rub down then taped up and the ivory white centre will be laid up.
That's all the taping done including the squintness of the originals.
Lunchtime then out with the red paint.

I can see I'm going to have to give the engine some serious cleaning so the improved cleading doesnt look to much out of place

Re: Getting Itchy fingers
More lovely sitting down progress.
All the lining out in red done. (Hopefully there will be  a video shortly, if all went well with recording today)
All the cleading was taped out to the noted measurements from the originals. Including the squint lines, which does my head in, but should present square when fitted back on the engine.
Just to let you see one tin. The rest are along the same lines.
The end result looks rather nice in my opinion.
Need to let the red set hard before doing the Ivory white.
Hope you all are enjoying this little painting blog.
Merry Christmas everyone and Lang may yer lum reek

Re: Getting Itchy fingers
Hi All
Yes it is Christmas Day but I don't have any toys to play with so on with the painting. I do find it enjoyable.
Needed 1.5mm masking vinyl but did not have none. So made my own on the cutter.
Ivory white applied.
Tape removed. Need a couple touch up in the red once it is dry. No problem.
That is the block cleading almost ready for top clear coating.

Re: Getting Itchy fingers
On to the Ivory middle.
The result. (Still to touch up and tidy)
Just to let everything harden up and tidy up a couple edges. Then it's on to clear coat.

Its clear what has happened!
Things are going back to shiny big style. Now on to the clear coat shooting. Much harder as you can not see the coverage very easily. One run but that will buff out before the next coat.
I think it is progressing well.

Re: Getting Itchy fingers
Is the laquer brushed or sprayed ? Watched the video's of the lining out. I will be needing to do that when the time comes on the Foden, but not as much lining on a Foden. Often wondered if the centre lines were painted over the thicker line, first time I've seen it done.

Hi
Clear coat is sprayed. I will be doing at least 3 coats.

Re: Getting Itchy fingers
I would disagree about the amount of lining on a Foden.

Re: Getting Itchy fingers
I think it is safe to say. There is often a lot of lining on any steam engine and sometimes very little.

Re: Getting Itchy fingers
Hi All
Happy New Year to everyone.
Only one picture today of progress. 2nd clear coat applied.
Now to let it dry and do a light rub down. Then if I am happy with the finish, shoot for final coat. Otherwise it is 3rd coat and see how it goes.

Hi All
Well that is the 3rd clear coat shot. Tack coat this morning then a further build coat this afternoon. One final rub down to go and shoot for the finish (fingers, toes, and everything else crossed for a good finale)

Re: Getting Itchy fingers
Well that is most of the cleading done and hardening.
This lot is ready. Just a little polishing to get the shine up a bit more in a couple weeks.

Hope everyone has enjoyed this little painting blog.

Re: Getting Itchy fingers
Looks stunning lynn, learnt a lot as well
The worry now will be getting it all back on the engine without damaging it
Of course this will make the rest of the engine look ruddy terrible maybe I should book the engine in with you for a painting refurb next winter at least you wont need to do the cladding

Hi
LOL that would definitely need a rental of a industrial steam cleaner first.
