So What Do You Do?
Hi Guys,
Well you all know what Steve and I do for a living (if that's what you call it!)......So what do you all do? Be interesting to see who's retired, skilled, employed, own business, bus driver etc.
I bet the mix of our customers is quite broad so it would be interesting to see.
Dean
P.S. It doesn't have to be just our customers, if you are signed up to the forum and are reading this please feel free to participate, that way i can try to sell you something! lol

Re: So What Do You Do?
I'm a royal pain in the arse if you were to ask the wife
As for working wise, am a mechanical engineer who's recently cross skilled to electrical as well, and have been for ermmmmm, nah I'd rather NOT say but it's been more years than I care to mention haha.
Started life on the spanners as an apprentice forklift engineer n all that n then went on to many other jobs before finally settling within the pharmaceutical sector.
Dunno what else to put on really erm, 40 next year so anyone wishin to go out on the pi** around June time will be more than welcome, be a good excuse for a get together too I reckon (not that I condone drinking in any way shape or form, I just think it's the be all and end all of anything good in life (now yaz all think me an alky).
Been interested in traction engines since being a wee lad of 6 or there abouts and am damned glad that I'm finally getting around to building, owning and driving my own. Can't wait to rally it I realllllllllllllly cant. All that steam smoke n steam
The lads at work take the piss a little but I put it down to jealousy I'm apparently known as Al' Dibnah haha
ah well there ya go then, time for me to go to work See yaz all at Hollowell tomorrow if anyones going, don't forget, 12:30 BEER TENT, I'll be the one with a little lad an a Beagle dog!!
Take it easy
Best Regards
LilyJack

Re: So What Do You Do?
Not a lot at the moment, came out of work last November,so had a role reversal with the missus. She works full time and I'm at home as a house husband, which drives me around the bloody twist at times, not used to it as I had always worked before.Mind you, trying to get a 13 year old to keep his room tidy is hard enough work on its own
But all is not bad,as I had a job interview last week with the Royal Mail and should find out wether I got a job next week
I also test games for my kids on the Xbox 360 during the days, got to make sure these games are suitable for them
Bungle,I suggested your "job" to my missus but I cant put her reply on here for fear of being chucked off
Cheer's for now Tony

re so what do you do
I am now retired and am doing what I've been trying to do for years, ie, not go to work. I did a 5 year apprentiship as a Fitter and Turner, then went to sea as a Marine Engineer. Did 12 months on Tankers and bulk carriers then spent 4 years on 2 P&O cruise ships, then back to bulk carriers. Came ashore and went to Power Stations. 1st was 4X30MW turbines and 2X60MW turbines. Next was 6X280 MW turbines and 16200 kpa and was there for 20 years. Then it was back to sea on coal fired turbine ships which were a smaller version of the 1st power station I was at. (almost a model). Then assisted in Commissioning a new Power Station, this time a 450MW turbine and 25000kpa pressure and supercritical as well. This means the water goes straight from water to superheated steam. After another job on a ship it was time to give it away, as the brain wanted to do it but the body didn't. Then another Power Station with 4X30MW, 2X350Mw and 2X450MW turbines, also 25000kpa. (There are 7kpa to 1 psi). Then we went to UK and Ireland (where I had my first Guiness, now have the taste.)for 10 months (drove 22000miles) and arrived back in Australia on P&O's Aurora, which meant I could wake up in the morning and not have to go to work. We then moved house and now the new shed is completed and am about to fit it out. It is 20M X 12m. Should be big enough.

Re: So What Do You Do?
On paper it says I am an Agricultural Engineer. The rural life is where my love of old tractors and steam has come from but unfortunately would never have of paid for any of my Hobbies!
I realised many years ago that although working on farms was an idyllic existance there was little money in it.
Left college and managed to wangle a job working on North Sea oil platforms where the money was better but the landscape was a little bland unless there was a storm then bland it was not!
5 Years later I ended back on dry land working for a civil engineering company keeping their fleet of plant and HGV's on the road.
Company folded and I decided to take the plunge to self employment, one man and his Escort Van complete with a tool kit and I will fix anything attitude.
Has grown a little in the last 15 years, a few staff and mostly working on Municipal Vehicles, dustcarts, road sweepers etc.
Do I wish I was still back on the farm? Yes most days. Am I glad I earn a bit more now than I would have been had I stayed? Yes everyday!!

Re: So What Do You Do?
just working on the 2" governors now some of the parts are unbelievably small.
thinking of posting a few photo guides on the forum, showing the process of machining in a little more detail and hopefully giving you guys a little more insight into what is actually involved in getting the kits together, the 2" governors will be first and if it proves popular we may do more as and when "interesting" parts come up, watch this space
