Just received valve cover ID plates today................. So on with the high temp paint, then onto the engine & lovely they look too!!

I can't get my pics to look as good as Lynn's, it's abit out of focus, but you get the general idea!!

It's all starting to look very "saphisticated"

Dear santa can I please have for Xmas..

A bigger garage.
A 4" showmans engine
And as i've been bad some coal too!

Hmmm I dont think it's going to come true though! no matter how long I stay sitting on the knee of the fake santa at the local groto Laughing

Lynn, I noticed your post about the plates.. If you have something in mind then please let me know and I can get something sorted out for you.. if your after a plate like Tone's I can do them. I have an order for a showmans plate to fit under the gen like tony has done so I can do the same for you if you so wish.. dont forget I can do any lettering and any boarder style too... and I hope at the fraction of the cost.. wont be till after xmas and new year though before i get round to getting on to it..

I have to say looking at everyone's lining out, and it being the Christmas challenge rather than wheel building, I am becoming quite nervous. The bar has been set very high, and I hope I can keep the standard high. Neutral

Another lovely engine Tony, well done.

Hi All,
Happy New Year.
I've managed to do abit over the last couple of days, mainly kits 22 & 26. As usual I've been giving my buffing wheel a bit of a work out, to great effect, well I think so anyway!!

Here are some pics of progress, (I'm trying to get "sharper" images by supporting camera when I take pics, but still can't get them as good as others on the forum............Lynn!!!).

Polish & painted the water cock & changed the compression nuts from an old fitting I had laying arround, as they were easier to polish!
Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 4 Te127

The injector:-
Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 4 Te227

I've put a slight "correction" bend in the balance pipe:-
Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 4 Te322

Check valves took a bit of time to clean up & polish, but worth it, as they'll be on show on the completed engine:-
Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 4 Te419

Boiler drain/blow down valve:-
Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 4 Te515

The other side check valve:-

view from behind:-

And last for the moment, the very lovely sight glass assembly:-

OK hope you enjoy pics,

Tony

Hi Tony.

Happy New Year.

Nice pictures. Bit envious as not been out to the engine since 24th Dec. Very nice work on the polishing. I could not decide to do the check valves or not so left them. My polishing is no where near your quality. I see you got the 2 nuts for the water gauge fittings or did you source them elsewhere?

You appear to be missing a cog from the 2nd shaft gear pack. Are you havin a problem with it or just not put it on?

Blimey Lynn, you don't miss much!!
The lock nuts on the sight glass ain't there, STW are sending them out when they get back from hols, as they were not in the kit.
I have sent the third gear back for redrilling, the M6 threaded holes didn't line up with the rest of the assembly. I think the gear wasn't in the jig correctly when the holes were drilled & tapped, consequently they were not concentric with the gear circumferance!
I thought about redrilling & tapping myself, using cetre hub as a guide, but my piller drill table is small & would have had trouble holding it properly, also STW are so quick to replace any "faulty" item that I decided that was the easiest route to take!!

Has the snow started falling over your side of the hill yet?

Hi Tony

Yes the snow started sometime during the night. About 1/2" at the moment.

Also spotted. Remember to cut a slot in your duck board as when you put the water pipes on it will be trapped.

Post  Tony King Thu 12 Jan 2012, 3:49 pm

Hi All,
The forum seems abit quite lately, so I thought I bung up a couple of pics of my efforts to paint the second saft gears!!
I decide to spray paint these, as machined finish is so good.

Having masked up and covered everything that don't want paint on it!!........... Primer coat:-
Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 4 Te128

This is the other side, in undercoat......... Still wet!!:-
Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 4 Te228

Top coat, wheel side:-
Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 4 Te323

Having removed masking tape:-
Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 4 Te420

The inner side is bright red, along with the rest of the "internal stuff"!! :-
Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 4 Te516

The universal joint cover in the centre will be bright red too, (I thought about bright yellow to go with the wheels, but decided that might be abit OTT, even for me!!) maybe with a stripe or something.........When I get a chance to do it!!

Regards,
Tony

Looks stunning Tony, i love the bright red. Can I ask the colour you have used. Not much had happened on our engine build for a while now waiting for the next kit, but it has given me a chance to get the bowser done. More to follow.

Also booked myself on a sign writing day course in a few weeks time which will help as not ever done any lining before, thought I would see how it should be done.... lol!

Keep up the great work

Hi Rob,
Thanks for kind comments.
The paint is Craftmaster BRIGHT RED!! However, I also use B&Q one coat exterior gloss, MAILBOX RED, when I'm brush painting castings etc.
Can't tell the differance colourwise when dry. Finish is excellent with both!
What a good idea to do sign writing course............... No chance of doing something like that round here!!

Tony

Thanks for the colour info Tony.

In relation to a course, you never know, I tried everywhere and couldn't find one. Then found about a signwriter in Midhurst who runs Sunday courses for very reasonable rates. May be worth a call to the local signwriters and see if they know anyone running them.

Hi Rob,

Would the signwriter be Miss Wizz by any chance??

I believe she is good and does do Gold leaf as well.

Cheers Kev.

Morning Kev

No not Miss Whizz, although I do like her fathers gallopers and the painting she did on them. On this occasion it's Wayne Osborne.

Edit - for those who haven't seen them...here they are. http://misswizz.posterous.com/tag/gallopers

Hi All,
Been able to get a few more hours in this week due to postpoment of a job!! So while I'm having a coffee, I thought I'd bung up some more pictures of progress!!

As I said in previous photo entry I have painted the "universal joint cover", now Bright Red!!:-
Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 4 Te129

Have now started adding more lines to the exciter platform.......... Masking tape in place:-
Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 4 Te229

Paint in place!!:-
Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 4 Te324

Platform inplace again on the engine:-
Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 4 Te421

Here's a couple of general views of the whole engine:-
Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 4 Te517

Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 4 Te616

I'm not sure that alot of people will aprove of my lining design, as it's far wider & more pronounced than on the full size engines. However it was my intension to make the engine "unique" rather than a copy of a "real engine"!!

As always, when each kit is added to engine, one ( well me, anyway!!) is totally impressed with the way it's starting to look like the real thing!! (My paint job excluded from this statement!!).

It's also getting very heavy & this makes me realise that some serious thought is going to have to go into "restraining" this engine in my trailer!!

OK, that's it for now,
Regards,
Tony

Fantastic Tony!

Yes it is YOUR engine and you can do what you like. I am the same with my lining out. It is not all the same size but I like the way it looks. After all we are already banished to the bad boy & girl corner as we did not manufacture every nut and bolt upwards.

Just had a thought. Have you put a gasket on the piston covers before you fix the exciter platfor in place?

Hi Lynn,
Forgot to say that, as yet there is no gasket on cylinder covers. I don't know if STW are going to supply a gasket........... I think I read some where that it's to be stuck down with foliac along with the steam chest covers.......... Not sure!!
Anyway I'll not worry about that till I start on the final phase when starting to stop leaks & testing on compressed air & running the engine. Oh joy of joys!!
So to answer your question I'll not properly fix the exciter platform till then!

Tony

Alternatively for the steam chest and front cover buy some gasket paper from a local car spares place. I have done this so I can cut my own gaskets for these and the two clack valves on the boiler.
