Re: Tone's Showmans second lot!
They all look all the same size to me. Aren't the back ones ment to be bigger?

Hi Lynn,
The pics don't really show the sizes very well, but the rear are infact a little bit bigger in reality
Regards,
Tony

Re: Tone's Showmans second lot!
I'm having all sorts of problems uploading images , so here's another attempt to get pics of progress up for all to see!! :-
Looks like I finally got things to work, I won't bother with explanations, as I'm loosing the will to live here!!

Tony

Re: Tone's Showmans second lot!
Hi All,
I thought spring had arrived & we'd seen the end of snow, but no, it's all white here again!!
Anyway, more pics which hopefully I can upload without too much trouble!!
I'll post traction wagon progress first, then if all works I'll do the Showmans!
As can be seen, the wood is superb & all the joints very accurate & nice & tight, I really enjoyed assembling these
OK lets see if this lot "loads" OK!!
Regards,
Tony

Re: Tone's Showmans second lot!
OK, looks like pics are going up, so here's the Showmans progress & boy things are getting dramatic now
Very repetitive, very rewarding, so first off the light bulb holders, strip solder & reassemble........ got the hang of it after doing all 64!!
I made up spacers & simply clamped a strip of wood under the "lamp board" to ensure the lights would be perfectly inline :-
The next few are self explanatory:-
Spectacular sight, I reckon

Tony

Re: Tone's Showmans second lot!
That's a lot of progress for one day, super job on engine and wagons. Still building the wagon wheels so resisted the temptation to do the woodwork. Need to make space if I am honest.
What preparation did you do on the wagon chassis? Did you sand them first or is the wood still it as delivered?

Re: Tone's Showmans second lot!
You just need a scale hand lamp then take one bulb out to fit it and put the lamp near the gauge glass/ pressure gauge. Be handy checking on things at the beer tent

Re: Tone's Showmans second lot!
It has to be said Brian, it took more than a day to do that little lot
However, the wood on the wagon chassis is pretty much as supplied, so I've just glued it all together!!..... looks fine to me!!
Also, like you I'm seriously running out of room to hide all this stuff away I guess it'll end up in the lounge beside the telly
My dear departed wife would not approve however my daughter might......hmmmm maybe not!!

Tony

Spot on Tony, looks grand. Just one question, what is that big block of metal in the middle of the boiler?
Seriously, it looks really nice!

Re: Tone's Showmans second lot!
Hi All,
The roof is progressing nicely, so here's a few more pics of the roof boards going on:-
I decided to cut the wood from the roof, rather than shape the underside of the chimney ring, easier & quicker with a nice sharp chisel!!
Last, another picture of the lights, this time the workshop is dark............. Lovely sight
I'm going to try operating the engine with the canopy "intact", if that doesn't work out, then I'l start sawing lumps out of the roof to give better access, but am reluctant to do that at this stage!!
Regards,
Tony

Re: Tone's Showmans second lot!
Hi Tony
Looking good. I have done the cut out and will make an insert with the bits cut out to fit in when the engine is sitting.
Its impossible to see anything on the engine without a cutout.

Re: Tone's Showmans second lot!
Tony,
That is an amazing looking engine you have put together, it really will be a shame to set fire to it and get it dirty.
Has anyone tried a very low seat position to avoid the roof cut out?
I popped into STW yesterday to collect my next kit, and had a look at the showmans control model, with the skeleton roof on this is one big engine. Ian kindly turned the lights on for me and the way the top of the engine is illuminated looked fantsatic. Now how about a showman conversion of a Road Loco?

Re: Tone's Showmans second lot!
Nice work Tony, I like to see a bit if finishing, neat work for the chimney ring. Do you work by engine light now or do you still switch on the workshop lights.
Ian
The seat is already low compared to most miniatures, I do not think there is enough room to go lower on this. However, check out Adrian on his 6" Garret 4CD, he does look through under the canopy. Maybe you can do something like this Tony but you will see less as you have more in front of you.
I have already mentioned to Steve about converting the road loco as you only ever see the Burrell Scenic Showman's in 4" scale. Blackbeard could possibly be changed in the future but I think it would not have the twisty brass (like the Fowlers Renown and Repulse) as STW exhausted all the available brass twists in the UK.

Re: Tone's Showmans second lot!
My observations of people running these scenic showman's without a roof cut out is that they are either masochists, gynaecologists or both. Don't think you can get the seat low enough to easily look under the roof unless you also have bilateral below knee amputations.
Having driven Ian Barker's engine, one gets a good view of the wheels at the front with a cut out up to the cylinder, may be less of a cut out depending upon seat position and height of driver. I have so far found Frederick comfortable to drive sitting to the left of the bunker. It is the kerb that will cause you grief on the road!

Re: Tone's Showmans second lot!
Most interesting!! I have been considering the "roof on whilst driving" conumdrum having quickly dispensed with the idea in the early days and having modified the existing seat bracket. I am now looking at fabricating a new single person only seat at the original lower position or possibly lower than that but I am also adding 4" to the roof struts to gain more access but for it not to look too silly and have removed the right hand rear one. I am still finding my face is rammed up against the back of the roof and when I hit a bump in the road I will probably have to retrieve teeth from it or the road, still at least we know a good dentist!!! I see from the above shot that Garrets roof is higher then the DCC by some way. I find the left hand side very enjoyable especially with a second man to fire and look out whilst on the road, last weekend it was most useful as people pass at alarming speeds and proximities. I am still thinking that the RL guys might have the slightly better deal here, we at least dont look too odd without a roof but the Showmans do look naked!! I do like the idea though of cruising up and down the playpen with the whole ensemble.
With regards to conversions.... if I'd wanted a Showmans......etc etc and yes I know President started out as one but they quickly saw the error of their ways

Re: Tone's Showmans second lot!
Just a thought, why not put a couple of gas-struts on the rear stays and bingo you can see right through to the front of the engine. Also it would act as a spoiler and stop the wheels spinning under acceleration.

You'll learn soon i think: certainly from the obstetrcs view. Basically small spaces with a tricky reach. Could also include ENT surgeons in the same category.
