Situation nominal.

When people ask my birthday I say "I will give you a clue. It snowed on my 21st. " they always think winter instead of the end of May.

Hi All,
Decided to do abit more in the workshop as weather is "orrible" outside!!
The following pics are self explanitory, so I'll just post them up for you to see progress so far! (Probably send a few of you off to sleep!!)
As usual, I've gone for ease of masking up & simple lines, so not at all like the real thing, but hopefully still "look the part"!! Smile

Hi All,
The lining paint seems to dry quite quickly, so I've put some more paint on this evening:-

Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 9 Te151

Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 9 Te249

I now want to add some black paint some where, however, now I've got to this stage, I wish I'd done the design differently with black at the corners of the castings & lines forming the panel sections like on the tender & belly tank!!

Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 9 Te152

Too late now!! I don't think I can be bothered to change it!!

Hi All,
Here's some pics of latest progress.

The foot plate area is starting to fill up with controls now & nice they look too:-

Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 9 Te154

Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 9 Te252

The lubricator body. Started by filing the raised letters with fine emery cloth :-

Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 9 Te341

Then applied non ferrous metal primer:-

Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 9 Te435

Apply bright red top coat & reclean raised leters with fine wet n dry, & set in place on the engine:-

Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 9 Te527

As usual I've polished all the linkages & although you may not be able to see it, I've put a gentle taper on the ends of the regulator rod to make it abit more like full size!! :-
Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 9 Te625[/url

Having assembled the external parts of the lubbricator, I might drill & fit another pin beside the original pin on the cam mechanism, but on the inside radius to stop the piston head "escaping" the cam, I don't think that should upset the stroke too much, but should stop things "jamming up"!:-

Post  Tony King on Sun 03 Jun 2012, 9:45 pm

Hi All,
The guvenor is a bit of the engine that always draws peoples attention, so it has to be good!!

Here's a few pics of mine going together:-

Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 9 Te155

Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 9 Te253

Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 9 Te342

Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 9 Te436

Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 9 Te528

Making it look "pretty" is streight forward...........Making it work, is'nt Laughing I've been playing around with all the bits, polishing here, easing there & I've got, what I think is an operational "top end", ie the bits you can see outside the cylinder block. However having mounted the guvenor on top of the brass sleeve (outside of the block!!) I'm think I'm going to have to machine bits off the top of the internal bore of the sleeve as the guvenor operating rod is'nt totally concentric so the valve is "binding" at the bottom of the sleeve. If I can sort that out, then the only thing that should stop the guvenor working is the friction on the gland packing & to that end I think "O" rings is the only way to get steam tight with low friction!! UNLESS, anyone can sugest otherwise, which would be very welcomed infomation!! Very Happy

Regards,
Tony

Hi All,
More pics to send you all off to sleep!!

Glued up the govenor drive belts, although I did cut the edge of second belt to the guvenor to thin it down abit:-

The following is my usual "painting stages" of the drive gear guard:-

Tone's Showmans second lot! - Page 9 Te529

Just a coat of varnish to go on, then it's back on the engine.

I've been playing with bits of thin wire & wool "wicking up" all my oilers. I put oil them last night & wonder of wonders the oil is now in little puddles on the floor all round the engine this morning Very Happy

I'll post more bed time pics to help you knod off Sleep

Tony

Looking at one of your pics reminds me to inquire about the motion drip tray. Since one of the block batches had the holes tapped out too big.

Hi Lynn,
Yah, I remember there was some "issue" with cylinder drip tray, however mine was obviously not effected as it bolted straight into place, with a little "tweek" Shocked to get her to sit right!!
Have you got your engine turning under steam power yet? Very Happy

Hi Tony

Engine has not been fired for a month now. Been busy playing nurse to both parents. Mother had pneumonia and father had a bit of cancer on his face.

I really do not fancy running the engine without the flywheel as not only does the flywheel dampen out the piston motion but also acts as a damper to stop runaway which feasibly could happen over a very few strokes. Also most importantly I have a big hole in the top of the block as my safety valve is away to get the adjuster bolt sealed and then re-calibrated.

Tim

I'll second that Tim, had another steam up yesterday as I had system for getting water in so ran for about 2 1/2 hours with a strong fire and lots of pressure, ran the crank for a good long time. Andy came over and watched and whilst running I thought I would try the siren as its in the 1/4 BSP hole just to block it, it blew first time straight away!!! It was always a bit temperamental on the other engine and would never blow below about 60 psi so based on its performance I reckon there was easily 100 psi in the boiler yesterday. When we had finished the whole engine was covered in crap and Andy commented about it and keeping clean and other engines and their current looks, I dont expect to keep it clean and to be fair it wont look right and you'll spend more time cleaning than runninng. I don't know if anyone has come across a 6" Rushton in the rally field owned by a guy from Peterborough affectionately known as "brasso" but he literally takes the thing apart each evening after running and cleans it !!! What a Face However each to their own I know why I have built this engine and what I expect from it and how I will use it and good luck to everyone else and what they do, and if they are able to keep it look beautiful then they have more patience than me, and thats not difficult.

What ever it's a unique paint job which very much personalises my engine!!
